The Washington Commanders are a professional American football team headquartered in Washington, DC. The Commanders are a member of the NFC East division of the National Football League (NFL). The team’s home games are held at FedExField in Landover, Maryland, while its headquarters and training centre are located in Ashburn, Virginia. The squad has played over 1,000 games and is one of just five in the NFL with over 600 total wins.
It was the first NFL club to have a marching band and a fight song, “Hail to the Redskins,” which referred to the team’s previous moniker from 1937 through 2019. Forbes estimates the franchise’s worth to be around $4.2 billion, making it the league’s fifth most valuable franchise. The Boston Braves were created in 1932, but the name was changed the following year to the Boston Redskins.
The Washington Redskins were formed when the franchise relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1937. For decades, numerous Native American groups have viewed the Redskins as a derogatory brand. As part of a wave of name changes in the aftermath of the George Floyd protests, it was retired in 2020 due to pressure from various NFL and team sponsors. Before rebranding as the Commanders in 2022, the squad was known as the Washington Football Team for two seasons.
Super Bowls XVII, XXII, and XXVI were won by the team in 1937 and 1942. The Redskins have finished second in the league six times, losing the championship games in 1936, 1940, 1943, and 1945, as well as Super Bowls VII and XVIII. They have a playoff record of 23–18 after winning 14 division titles and making 24 appearances.
Their three Super Bowl victories are tied with the Denver Broncos and the Las Vegas Raiders for fourth place, behind the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots (both with six), the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys (both with five), and the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants (both with four) (four each).Washington won all of its championships throughout a ten-year period. The squad appeared in the NFL Championship six times between 1936 and 1945, winning two.
Between 1982 and 1991, they made seven postseason appearances, won four Conference crowns, and won three Super Bowls in four appearances. Washington, on the other hand, only had four winning seasons from 1946 through 1970 and never made the playoffs. From 1956 to 1968, they did not have a single winning season, including a 1–12–1 regular-season record in 1961.
The team has won the NFC East four times, had a winning record nine times, and made the playoffs seven times since winning the Super Bowl in 1991. In 2020, the franchise made significant changes, including retiring the Redskins name and logo and replacing them with former Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera, as well as naming Jason Wright as team president, the first black person to do so in NFL history.
Rivera’s staff includes defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, the son of former Redskins head coach Norv Turner, and offensive coordinator Scott Turner, the son of former Jaguars and Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio. The team transitioned to a 4–3 defence under Rivera and Del Rio, after previously using a 3–4 system under Shanahan and Gruden.
The franchise selected Chase Young, a highly ranked defensive end out of Ohio State, with the second overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft due to their 3–13 record the previous season. Dwayne Haskins, the team’s first-round draught pick in 2019, was dismissed prior to the end of the season due to inefficient play and failure to fulfil the team’s off-field requirements.
Despite this, Washington won the division for the first time since 2015 with a 7–9 record, becoming only the third club in NFL history to win a division with a losing record in a non-strike year, joining the 2010 Seattle Seahawks and the 2014 Carolina Panthers, both of whom Rivera coached. Robert Rothman, Dwight Schar, and Frederick W. Smith, the team’s minority owners, were rumoured to have hired an investment banking firm to help them find potential purchasers for their 40 percent ownership in the franchise.
The group, which purchased a share in the company in 2003, was said to have lobbied Snyder for years to change the name. Snyder was granted a $400 million debt forgiveness by the league in April 2021 in exchange for the remaining 40% in a deal valued more than $800 million. The team hired Martin Mayhew as general manager and Marty Hurney as another high-ranking executive in 2021, among other appointments and adjustments.
Mayhew, who is black, was hired as the first minority general manager, head coach, and president in NFL history. Ryan Kerrigan, the franchise’s all-time sack leader, signed for the division rival Philadelphia Eagles as a free agent. Furthermore, in July 2021, an independent investigation led by lawyer Beth Wilkinson into the team’s workplace culture under owner Daniel Snyder was completed.
It was discovered that sexual harassment, bullying, and intimidation were all too typical at the company while he was in charge. In response, the NFL penalised the team $10 million, and Snyder voluntarily stepped aside as the team’s general manager for a few months, handing over the reins to his wife Tanya. While appreciating individuals who claim to be offended, team owner Daniel Snyder wrote in a 2013 letter to the Washington Redskins Nation that a poll performed by the Annenberg Public Policy Center in 2004 revealed that 90% of Native Americans were not upset by the name and logo.
The Washington Post conducted a similar poll in 2016 that yielded very identical results. Academic scholars, on the other hand, questioned the scientific validity of public opinion polling, which asks about the Redskins as part of a larger telephone survey on other topics. In a research conducted in 2020 by social scientists from the University of Michigan and the University of California at Berkeley, 49 percent of Native Americans said the term was derogatory, with the number rising to 67 percent among those who were more involved in Native American culture.
The Washington Post declared in 2014 that they would no longer use the “Redskins” term in their editorials, and that other news outlets would informally refer to them as “the Washington pro football club” or avoid printing their nickname entirely. ESPN’s employee work regulations have been amended to allow reporters to pick how they refer to the team in the future.
Following the George Floyd protests in 2020, 87 shareholders and investors signed a letter to club and league sponsors Nike, FedEx, and PepsiCo, demanding them to break relations until the name was altered. Several retailers began pulling Redskins goods from their stores around the same time. As a result, in July 2020, the team completed a review and stated that its name will be retired.
Until a permanent name could be decided, the team was known as the Washington Football Team. The Washington Football Team became the Washington Commanders on February 2, 2022, after announcing their new name. In 2011, the Redskins wore the burgundy jersey and gold pants for five home games and one road game against the Cowboys, the burgundy jersey with white pants for three home games and one road game against the Dolphins, the white jersey and burgundy pants for five road games, and the white jersey and gold pants for a Bills game in Toronto.
The club donned an upgraded throwback uniform of the 1937 championship squad in a game against the Carolina Panthers the next year, which included a helmet pattern based on the logo-less leather helmets worn at the time. For player safety reasons, a new NFL rule in 2013 specified that clubs could not utilise alternate helmets (therefore limiting them to one helmet). As a result, in a game against the San Diego Chargers, Washington donned its 1937 throwbacks, but without the emblem from the normal helmet.
In order to be more consistent with the new Nike uniforms that had debuted the previous season, the Redskins eliminated the burgundy collar off their white jerseys. The gold pants were used with the team’s standard uniforms from 2014 to 2016, however the burgundy trousers were brought back as part of the team’s away outfit later that year.
As part of the NFL Color Rush in 2017, Washington brought the all-burgundy look back. Nike initially provided them with an all-gold uniform, which they refused to wear since it was “garish.” For the bulk of their home games in 2018, Washington switched their gold pants with white. Washington last wore the gold pants in Week 17 against the Eagles. Following the name change in 2020, the team’s new logo was a basic “W” derived from the rebuilt Washington wordmark, with the player’s jersey number in gold replacing the helmet logo and striping.
For the first time since 2009, the season also saw the return of the all-white look.In 2022, the Commanders, who had been renamed, debuted a new uniform set with military-inspired designs. The primary home outfit remained burgundy with gold and white stripes, but the inscriptions were replaced with gold letters. The team name is affixed to the front numbers, which are also gold but have white trim. Burgundy/white gradient numbers with black trim, as well as burgundy/white gradient and black sleeve stripes, are featured on the road white uniform.
On top of the number, the city name is written. Either burgundy or white pants are worn with both sets. The team name is in gold on the left chest, and the numbers are gold with burgundy trim on the alternate black uniform. This uniform is complemented by black pants. The Commanders introduced two helmet alternatives in anticipation of the NFL lifting its one-shell limit in 2022. The “W” symbol is on each side of the primary burgundy helmet, with a gold stripe on top, while the uniform numbers are on each side of the alternate black helmet.
