The University of Southern California Trojans football team competes in the American football league as a representative of the university. The Trojans are a member of the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and the Pac-12 Conference’s South Division (Pac-12).Since its inception in 1888, the programme has amassed over 830 victories and 11 national championships in Division I football.

USC has won 39 conference titles and has 13 unbeaten seasons, including eight perfect seasons. Seven Heisman Trophy winners, 81 first-team Consensus All-Americans, including 27 Unanimous selections, and 510 NFL draught picks, the most of any university, have all come from USC.  Former Trojans players Matt Leinart, O. J. Simpson, and Ronnie Lott, as well as coaches John McKay and Howard Jones, have all been elected into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Junior Seau, Bruce Matthews, Marcus Allen, and Ron Yary are among the 13 Trojans inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, tying them for the most of any school. The Trojans have appeared in 53 bowl games, including 39 of the New Year’s Six. USC has the best all-time post-season winning percentage among schools that have appeared in 50 or more bowl games, with a 34–19 record.

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, located across the Exposition Park Rose Garden from USC’s University Park, Los Angeles campus, hosts Trojan home games. The USC Trojan Football Department is housed in the $70 million, 110,000-square-foot John McKay Athletic and Academic Center, which opened in 2012. The building houses the Stevens Academic Center (which includes space for tutoring, counselling, study, and computer rooms for student-athletes), a weight room, an athletic training room, and a state-of-the-art digital media production facility for all of USC’s 21 sports), as well as meeting rooms, coaches’ offices, and a locker room for the football programme.

The two-story video board in the Parker Hughes atrium, which can simultaneously display six large-screen televisions as well as advertising videos and graphics, is the focus of the McKay Center. The 60,000-square-foot basement houses a weight room, athletic training room, locker rooms, and a players lounge, while the 25,000-square-foot ground floor houses a Student-Athlete Academic Services centre, a reception area, and an outdoor courtyard, and the 25,000-square-foot second floor houses football coaches’ offices, football team meeting rooms, an outdoor patio, and a state-of-the-art video production facility.

Heritage Hall, the Galen Dining Center, Brittingham Field, and the Howard Jones Field/Brian Kennedy Field practise facility are all within walking distance of the John McKay Center. Howard Jones Field/Brian Kennedy Field is where USC’s football team practises on campus. Brian Kennedy Field was added to the stadium that was formerly known as Howard Jones Field in the fall of 1998. Goux’s Gate, named for long-time assistant coach Marv Goux, was erected at the practise field’s entrance in early 1999.

“USC football players mixed with cinema stars who came to their games and gave them tiny parts in their movies,” wrote Garry Wills, “beginning in the silent movie era.”  John Wayne, who played tackle on the 1925 and 1926 teams, and Ward Bond, who played on the 1926–1928 teams, were two examples of such players.  (The Atlanta Falcons selected John Wayne, 64, in the 1972 NFL draught as a publicity hoax.) )

Simpson (actor),Allan Graf (director and stunt coordinator),[130] Aaron Rosenberg (producer),Mazio Royster (actor), Patrick O’Hara (actor),Russell Saunders (director),Nate Barragar (director), Jesse Hibbs (actor),[136] Tim Rossovich (actor) (actor)Paul McDonald, Tom Harmon, Braven Dyer, Bill Symes, Jim Wilkerson, Dick Danahe, Bud Tucker, Jim Perry, Fred Gallagher, Mike Lamb, and Jeremy Hogue have all worked as colour analysts in the past.

Arbogast, Jackson, Tony Femino, Tim Ryan, Petros Papadakis, Lindsey Soto, Mark Willard, and Brandon Hancock have served as sideline announcers in the past. From 1956 to 1968, and again from 1977 to 1994, Los Angeles radio station KNX AM-1070 served as the team’s flagship station. From 1969 to 1972, the flagship was KFI AM-640, then KLSX FM-97.1 in 1998, XTRA AM-690 in 1999, and XTRA AM-690 in 2000. The Trojans’ flagship station from 2001 to 2005 was KMPC AM-1540. From 2006 to 2018, KSPN AM-710 served as the flagship.

On January 1, 2017, Pete Arbogast, a broadcaster for the Trojans since 1989, announced his sixth Rose Bowl game. In 1978 and 1979, Arbogast worked for USC’s campus radio station, KSCR, and called the Rose Bowl game for the institution. The Southern California Sportscasters Hall of Fame inducts Arbogast, Kelly, and Walden as members. One of the largest stadiums in the United States is the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Since the majestic stadium’s construction in 1923, USC has played football in the Coliseum. On October 6, 1923, the Trojans defeated Pomona College 23–7 in the school’s inaugural varsity football game.

The Coliseum held the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics’ opening and closing ceremonies, as well as track events, and is set to hold the 2028 Summer Olympics. The Coliseum has hosted a variety of sports teams throughout the years, including UCLA football, the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Raiders, the American Football League’s Los Angeles Chargers in 1960, and the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, which won the 1959 World Series. From concerts and speeches to track meets and motorcycle races, the Coliseum has held a wide range of activities.

The Coliseum currently seats 92,000 people at full capacity (almost all are chair-back seats). Exposition Park, which also includes museums, gardens, and the Banc of California Stadium, is home to the Coliseum, which spans 17 acres (69,000 m2). The nickname “The Grand Old Lady” has also been bestowed upon it. The Coliseum, like the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena previous to its demolition in 2016, is managed and administered by USC under a master lease deal with the LA Memorial Coliseum Commission.

Heritage Hall, the Galen Dining Center, Brittingham Field, and the Howard Jones Field/Brian Kennedy Field practise facility are all within walking distance of the John McKay Center. The Trojans had a turbulent 2015 season, finishing as Pac-12 Southern Conference champions with an overall record of 8–4 and a 6–3 record in Pac-12 play. Coach Steve Sarkisian was fired in the middle of the season due to personal reasons, and Clay Helton was named interim head coach once again.

Under Sarkisian, the Trojans were defeated by Stanford and Washington. USC fell to Notre Dame in Helton’s first game, but came back to win the next four. The South Division conference championship was decided by the game between USC and UCLA, which USC won 40–21. USC lost to Stanford (41–22) in the Pac-12 Conference championship game after the Cardinal (8-1 in Pac-12, 9-2 overall) clinched the North Division title, their third in four years, with a win over California.

The Trojans were defeated by the Wisconsin Badgers in the 2015 Holiday Bowl, 23–21. According to Pro Football Focus, who rated him as the season’s finest pass-blocking right tackle, Zach Banner started all 14 games at tackle, was named First Team All-Pac-12, and received USC’s Offensive Lineman of the Year Award after allowing only nine total pressures on 426 pass attempts.

Sarkisian sued USC for $30 million in wrongful termination on December 7. Clay Helton’s first full season as the head coach of the USC Trojans took place in 2016. The squad went 10–3 (7–2 Pac-12) and won the Rose Bowl after finishing second in the South Division. The Trojans began a nine-game winning streak to complete their season after a 1–3 start in September that included defeats to No. 1 Alabama, No. 7 Stanford, and No. 24 Utah. Victories over No. 21 Colorado, No. 4 Washington, and No. 5 Penn State in the Rose Bowl are among the most memorable victories.

A few days before the Utah game, redshirt freshman quarterback Sam Darnold replaced Max Browne (who had a 2–2 record as a starter). After years of instability and coaching changes, the Trojans finally got some much-needed stability. The season came to a close with a thrilling 52–49 triumph over Penn State in the Rose Bowl, the team’s first Rose Bowl victory in eight years.

In the final Associated Press surveys of the season, USC was ranked third. Zach Banner, the team’s captain, was named first-team All-Pac-12 by CollegeSportsMadness.com for the second consecutive year. Senior CLASS Award, All-American first-team All-American first team, Phil Steele All-Pac-12 first team, Senior CLASS Award finalist (awarded to the nation’s finest senior who excels in community, classroom, character, and competitiveness), and Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year.
