The UCLA Bruins football team competes in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) football for the University of California, Los Angeles. They are members of the Pac-12 Conference. The Bruins have had various periods of success throughout their history, ranking in the top ten of the AP Poll at least in every decade since the poll’s inception in the 1930s. Under head coach Red Sanders, they had their first great run of success in the 1950s.

In nine years, Sanders led the Bruins to the Coaches’ Poll national championship in 1954, three conference titles, and an overall record of 66–19–1. Terry Donahue guided the Bruins to a 151–74–8 record in the 1980s and 1990s, including 13 bowl games and an NCAA-record eight consecutive bowl wins. The programme has produced 28 first-round NFL Draft picks, 30 consensus All-Americans, and a number of significant award winners, including Heisman Trophy winner Gary Beban. The USC Trojans are the biggest opponent of the UCLA Bruins. In 2018, Chip Kelly was named head coach.

The Bruins won the Pac-12 Conference South Division for two years and appeared in both the 2011 and 2012 Pac-12 Football Championship Games.Former Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks head coach Jim L. Mora was named the Bruins’ 16th head football coach on December 10, 2011, by UCLA athletics director Dan Guerrero. Mora agreed to a three-year deal.

UCLA’s new regime had early results, as the Bruins acquired a consensus No. 12 recruiting class in 2012, after having a class ranked in the high 40s when Neuheisel left.  The Bruins finished 9–5 in Mora’s first season, with a loss in the 2012 Holiday Bowl. The Bruins improved to 10–3 in Mora’s second season, culminating in a victory in the 2013 Sun Bowl.

The Bruins came within one game of reaching the Pac-12 title game, defeating crosstown rivals USC for the second year in a row, thanks to quarterback Brett Hundley’s leadership. The Bruins finished 10–3 in 2014 as well. The team defeated rival USC for the third year in a row and defeated Kansas State in the Alamo Bowl.  With 1,575 yards rushing, Paul Perkins topped the Pac-12.

The debut of freshman quarterback Josh Rosen, a series of injuries, and unpredictable play marked Mora’s fourth season in 2015.The Bruins concluded with an 8–5 record, including a Foster Farms Bowl loss to Nebraska. In 2016, the Bruins concluded with a 4–8 record. Rosen led UCLA to a 45–44 victory over Texas A&M in the 2017 season opener, completing 35 of 59 passes for 491 yards and four touchdowns.

The Bruins fought back from a 34-point deficit, the greatest in school history and the second-highest in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). [number one] Mora was fired by UCLA on November 19, 2017, following a 23–28 loss to USC at the Coliseum. Kelly was named the head football coach at UCLA on November 25, 2017.  He had also been interviewed for the role of Florida’s head coach. For the first time since 1943, the Bruins started the season with a 0–5 record in 2018.

They did, however, beat USC to end a three-game losing streak to their crosstown rivals.  UCLA finished with a 3–9 record, their worst since 1971 when they went 2–7–1. The Bruins opened the following season 0–3, losing by large touchdowns to Cincinnati, San Diego State, and No. 5 Oklahoma. For the first time since 1920–1921, the Bruins opened 0–3 in back-to-back seasons under Kelly.

Kelly had the worst 15-game start as a UCLA football coach since Harry Trotter with a 0–3 start to the 2019 season. The next week, when the Bruins faced No. 19 Washington State, they came back from a 49–17 deficit to win 67–63. The comeback was the third-largest in FBS history at 32 points. The Bruins were defeated by Oregon State 48–31 at home two weeks after beating Washington State.

This was the Beavers’ third road win over a Pac-12 opponent since 2014, and their largest since a 49–17 triumph at California in 2013. For the second year in a row, the Bruins finished with a 1–5 record. The Bruins came to Stanford after a bye week and defeated the Cardinal 34–16. UCLA won for the first time versus Stanford since 2008, stopping an 11-game losing run.

The Bruins rushed for 263 yards on 6.1 yards per run in the win, while holding the Cardinal to 198 total yards and only 55 rushing yards. UCLA and USC have an uncommon rivalry in that they are one of only a few Division I FBS clubs that share a major metropolis. Both are within the city borders of Los Angeles, about 10 miles (16 kilometres) apart. The two colleges also shared a stadium, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, until 1982.

Every year, the crosstown rivals compete for municipal bragging rights, the Victory Bell, and (historically) the right to play in the Rose Bowl. USC is the all-time leader in the series (2 Southern Cal victories vacated by the NCAA) With a capacity of 92,542, the Rose Bowl is a National Historic Landmark in Pasadena, California. Since the 1982 season, it has served as the UCLA Bruins’ home football field. After joining the Pacific Coast Conference in 1928, the Bruins played their home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The rival USC Trojans play their home games in the Coliseum. An on-campus facility was considered, but it was met with strong political resistance, especially from Edmund Gerald “Pat” Brown Sr., the governor at the time.  After the Trojans, but before the Los Angeles Rams, the Bruins were second on the schedule at the Coliseum. [98] In the 1963 Long Range Plan, a 44,000-seat stadium on campus was proposed for the site where Drake Stadium was subsequently erected.

The initiative was, however, thwarted by important local citizens as well as other officials.  Furthermore, the Coliseum was built by the State of California and is a state-owned asset. UCLA opted to relocate out of the Coliseum when the Oakland Raiders became the Los Angeles Raiders in 1982, after laborious talks with the city of Pasadena, and moved its home games to the Rose Bowl Stadium.

The Raiders had requested ownership of the facility as well as money from premium box sales at the Coliseum. Since moving to the stadium, UCLA has played in five Rose Bowl games, including the 1983 Rose Bowl at the end of the Bruins’ first season there. In 1995, UCLA and the then Los Angeles Raiders almost became partners with the National Football League in a new stadium at Hollywood Park but the proposal to build a stadium there was destroyed when Raiders owner Al Davis refused to allow a second NFL club at the proposed venue.

Moore Field, on the Vermont Ave. campus of the “Southern Branch of the University of California,” was home to the Bruins (formerly known as the Cubs) from 1919 to 1927.Spaulding Field, which contains two football fields, one grass and one artificial turf, or synthetic turf, is the football team’s on-campus practise facility. The Bruins don’t have a full 100-yard field for practise due to space concerns.

On August 1, 2017, the Wasserman Football Center, which is located immediately west of Spaulding Field, was dedicated. There are training and therapy rooms, weight rooms, football facilities, the Troy Aikman Strength and Conditioning Center, and locker rooms within the 75,000 square foot facility. Coaches’ offices, a nutrition centre, hydrotherapy pools, conference rooms, and the Terry and Andrea Donahue Team Auditorium are all located in the centre.

A barbershop, a players’ lounge, and a recruitment lounge and patio are among the other amenities. The official UCLA athletic colours were “True Blue” and gold from 2004 until 2017. The “True Blue” is a somewhat darker tint than the powder blue that teams previously wore. UCLA had the same colours as the California Golden Bears in the beginning: Yale Blue and California Gold.

The ocean was represented by blue, and the state of California, also known as the “Golden State,” was represented by gold. [Coach Red Sanders updated the football outfits when he arrived at UCLA for the 1949 season. Yale Blue has been updated to a lighter shade of blue. The baby blue, Sanders reasoned, would appear better on the field and in movies. Powderkeg blue, he’d call the baby blue uniform, powder blue with an explosive kick.

For the 1954 season, Sanders added the UCLA Stripe, a now-famous loop on the shoulders that gives the sense of movement.  White with a navy blue and gold shoulder stripe and gold pants became the away uniforms. The helmets were transformed into gold. The font for the numbers on the uniforms has been Clarendon typeface at times since the 1954 football season. Otherwise, block numerals have been used.

In the 1980s, the UCLA script was added to the helmets, and the uniform pants were changed to yellow to look better in colour publications. The jerseys were also changed to a lighter blue. Uniform pants were once again popular in the 1990s.True Blue colours were introduced in 2003.True blue shoulder stripes and numerals were added to the away uniforms in 2006, but they were replaced by navy blue in 2010.

The Bruins used a 1967 throwback outfit versus Washington and USC in 2009, though the team’s regular helmet was worn against USC.UCLA has participated in 36 bowl games, with a record of 16–19–1 .After California’s third consecutive loss in January 1951, the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) implemented a “no-repeat” rule for the Rose Bowl in the early 1950s.

UCLA’s undefeated 1954 season, which would have been the second of three consecutive appearances, was hampered. The next AAWU (Big Five) dropped the rule in 1959 (Washington won in 1960 and 1961), but the Big Ten maintained it until the early 1970s.Until the 1975 season, when the Bruins won the Rose Bowl, the Pac-8 (and Big Ten) did not allow multiple bowl teams. UCLA has won five Rose Bowl games in its twelve appearances; the most recent victory was in January 1986 (their third in four years), and the most recent appearance was in 1999.
