Syracuse University’s football team competes in the American football league as the Syracuse Orange. The Orange compete in the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).Since its inception in 1889, the programme has amassed almost 700 victories and has won one consensus Division I Football National Championship, defeating the Texas Longhorns in the 1960 Cotton Bowl Classic for the 1959 season. Since 1991, Syracuse has had two undefeated seasons, won five conference championships, and produced a Heisman Trophy winner, more than 60 first-team All-Americans, 18 Academic All-Americans, and more than 240 NFL players.

Former players Ernie Davis, Tim Green, Don McPherson, Art Monk, and former coaches Vic Hanson, Ben Schwartzwalder, and Dick MacPherson have all been elected into the College Football Hall of Fame, making Syracuse the second most in the ACC. [5] Jim Brown, Marvin Harrison, Larry Csonka, and Floyd Little are among the Orange’s eight Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees, which is tied for the fourth most of any institution.

The Orange have appeared in 26 bowl games, 10 of which are part of the New Year’s Six Bowls. Since 1952, Syracuse has finished in the final Top 25 rankings in the national polls 21 times and in the AP and Coaches Polls a combined 35 times. Syracuse has been in almost 200 Associated Press polls, including seven weeks at the top.

The Orange play its home games in Syracuse, New York’s Carrier Dome. “The Loud House” is another moniker for the stadium. Syracuse named defensive coordinator Scott Shafer to head coach the day after Marrone’s departure.  Despite bowl eligibility for the third time in four years, Coach Shafer’s first season was marred by inconsistency from the team. Syracuse finished the season 7–6 with a 21–17 victory against Minnesota in the 2013 Texas Bowl.

The Orange joined the ACC for the first time in 2013.  The 2014 season saw a significant dip in quality. Syracuse concluded with a 3–9 record. The Orange crumbled in 2015 after starting the season 3–0, losing 8 of their final 9 games to conclude the season 4–8,and on November 23, 2015, it was revealed that Shafer would be fired after the final game of the season. Syracuse has hired Bowling Green head coach Dino Babers as the new Orange head football coach after a lengthy coaching search. Babers is the school’s first African-American head coach.

As a head coach and an assistant coach, Babers brought with him an entertaining, up-tempo offence. Syracuse began Babers’ first season as coach with a 4–4 record, with the highlight of the first eight games being a 31–17 home upset of number-17 Virginia Tech. Syracuse maintained its momentum after the upset by defeating rival Boston College 28–20 on the road. However, in their following game, they were knocked out 54–0 by No. 3 Clemson.

Syracuse fell to ACC foe Pittsburgh 76–61 in the season finale. With a total score of 137, the game was the most scoring in FBS history.  Syracuse finished with a 4–8 record for the second year in a row. The Orange went 4–3 in 2017, including a win over No. 2 Clemson, but they lost their final five games to end 4–8 for the third year in a row. Jim Brown was an All-Pro and a Pro Bowl invitee every season he played in the NFL, was named the Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player three times, and led the Browns to an NFL title in 1964.

In eight of his nine seasons, he led the league in rushing yards, and by the time he retired, he had broken nearly every major rushing record. Brown was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971 as a result of his outstanding professional career. His achievements on the football field at Syracuse earned him a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame. Jim Brown was also inducted into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame, giving him an unique three-peat. Most professional football writers consider him to be the best football player ever.

Brown’s legacy, though, stretches beyond sports. Brown, along with a group of elite African American sportsmen from many sports disciplines such as Bill Russell, Muhammad Ali, and Kareem Abdul Jabbar, was one of the NFL’s initial social issue activists. Brown co-founded the Black Economic Union in the 1960s to promote the establishment of black-owned enterprises. He also founded the Amer-I-Can programme, which mentors youngsters in both inner cities and jails, in the 1980s.

The “golden age” of the Syracuse-Penn State rivalry was in the 1950s and 1960s, when the two teams faced off in a series of tough and frequently contentious games. From 1950 to 1966, Rip Engle headed Syracuse football, and from 1967 to 2011, Joe Paterno led Penn State football. Syracuse won 11 games versus Penn State’s ten between 1950 and 1970. Unfortunately, recent years have seen a decline in the intensity of the rivalry between the teams due to league reorganisation and scheduling conflicts.

The clubs first met on October 28, 1922, at the New York Polo Grounds, and battled to a scorelesstie, kicking off an East coast rivalry that has witnessed 71 total match-ups, with the teams playing nearly every season from 1922 through 1990. The only time Syracuse did not have a team was during the 1943 season, due to World War II. [122] Syracuse led the Nittany Lions 10-4-4 from 1922 to 1940, before Penn State won 8 straight from 1941 to 1949.

Penn State defeated Syracuse 40–0 in State College in 1947, thanks to a tenacious defence that reduced the Orange to (-47) total yards, an NCAA record. (-107 rushing yards, 60 passing yards, 49 total plays)  From 1956 to 1966, the Orange regained control, winning eight out of eleven games. The Nittany Lions have dominated since 1967, winning 24 of 27 games, including 16 straight from 1971 to 1986. Dick MacPherson led Syracuse to a 48–21 Carrier Dome triumph over the Nittany Lions in 1987. Syracuse won again at Penn State the following year, but lost the remaining two games before the series was suspended in 1991.

Penn State has won five straight games and leads the series 43–23–5. Penn State won 23–17 at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ in the most recent matchup. There are no scheduled match-ups between the two teams in the near future. The neighbouring Colgate Red Raiders were Syracuse’s biggest football opponents for many years. Colgate and Syracuse first met in football in 1891, with Colgate winning 22–16. The Red Raiders went on to win 12 of the series’ first 16 games. The Hoodoo tale arose from Colgate’s early dominance in the series (a play on a corruption of the word Voodoo). The teams have met a total of 67 times, with a 31-31-5 draw in the series.

Syracuse had established itself as a prominent force in Eastern college football by the late 1950s, and the games became increasingly one-sided. Colgate ended the series after the 1961 game in order to focus on playing smaller, peer schools. The rivalry was intermittently resurrected in the 1980s following the NCAA’s I-A/I-AA split in 1978, with Syracuse handily winning all three games played in the decade. After a 23-year hiatus, the rivalry was reignited in 2010, with Syracuse winning 42–7. In 2016, Syracuse hosted Colgate in a game at the Carrier Dome, which Syracuse won 33–7.

In 1890, Syracuse University made orange its official colour. The colour was chosen after a vote among students, alumni, teachers, and trustees, who noticed that it was a bold, vivid hue that no other school claimed. Syracuse University was the first university to employ only one primary colour scheme. It was chosen to “symbolise the golden apples of Hesperia, as well as the storey of the sunrise and promise for a golden future,” according to the press release.

The Orange’s early uniforms were basic white sweaters and dark slacks. These were used by Syracuse football players from 1889 to 1919. The colour orange was initially used in the 1920s. The backs of orange jerseys were sewn with a blue number, and black pants were changed with Khaki moleskin. Syracuse’s secondary hue, blue, became widely recognised.

Syracuse football wore white jerseys and orange pants at Archbold stadium throughout its glory years, beginning with the first bowl appearance in 1952. Coach Ben Schwartzwalder, who came from a military background and was always looking for an edge, thought white jerseys made his players look bigger, faster, and stronger from 1952 to 1966. He also tried an all-orange design to hide the football throughout his first three seasons (1949–51) and in 1958.  Syracuse only donned blue jerseys three times during that time period.

In 1967, the blue and orange colour scheme was used in the home. Since then, it’s been blue jerseys and orange pants at home until the first three Frank Maloney seasons (1974–76), when the newly assigned coach wanted to break away from the Schwartzwalder era with orange jerseys and unusually designed white helmets, before reverting to blue jerseys and orange helmets for the next 28 seasons. In the 2000s, Syracuse resumed wearing white and orange jerseys (along with pants) at home. Throughout the years, three colours (orange, white, and blue) have been employed in a variety of combinations.
