Steven David Daines (born August 20, 1962) is an American politician and former business executive who has served as Montana’s junior United States Senator since 2015. From 2013 to 2015, he was the Republican representative representing Montana’s at-large congressional district. Daines was elected to the vacant U.S. Senate seat in Montana in 2014. In 2020, he was re-elected, beating Montana Governor Steve Bullock, the Democratic nominee. Daines worked for Procter & Gamble and RightNow Technologies before joining politics. Daines was one of the youngest delegates to the 1984 Republican National Convention when he was in his senior year. “Ronald Reagan was a hero of mine. He was the first president for whom I had the opportunity to cast a ballot “He’s stated. Daines was also the president of the Michigan State University College Republicans. He and his wife launched the GiveItBack.com website in 2007, urging Governor Brian Schweitzer to return the state’s $1 billion excess to taxpayers. He was the Montana state chairman for Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee from 2007 to 2008, as well as a national surrogate for Huckabee.

Daines worked at Procter & Gamble for 13 years. He and his family went to Hong Kong and China for six years after seven years overseeing operations in the United States, building facilities to develop Procter & Gamble’s Asian business. Democratic opponents accused Daines of outsourcing U.S. employment to China during his 2014 Senate race. When he worked at RightNow Technologies, he claimed to have created hundreds of jobs in Montana. Daines left Procter & Gamble in 1997 to join his family’s construction company in Bozeman. Three years later, he met Greg Gianforte, the creator of RightNow Technologies, and was given responsibility for the company’s customer service section. Daines later rose through the ranks to vice president of North American Sales and vice president of the Asia-Pacific division. During his tenure, the cloud-based software firm went public and became the largest commercial employer in Bozeman. Daines worked for the firm until March 2012, when he quit to campaign full-time for Congress. In 2008, Daines ran for lieutenant governor of Montana with Roy Brown, the Republican governor contender. They took on Democratic Governor Brian Schweitzer and his campaign mate, John Bohlinger. Brown and Daines were defeated 65 percent to 33 percent in Montana’s election, gaining only seven of the state’s 56 counties. Daines declared his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat occupied by Jon Tester in 2012 on November 13, 2010. When US Representative Denny Rehberg revealed his decision to run against Tester, Daines pulled out of the Senate campaign and declared his candidacy for the House seat Rehberg was vacating. He received 71 percent of the vote in the three-way Republican primary. Daines beat Democr in the general election.

Daines attended a Natural Resources Defense Council fundraiser in Washington in July 2013, sparking rumours that he may compete for Max Baucus’s soon-to-be-vacant U.S. Senate seat.  He acknowledged raising $415,000 in campaign donations in the second quarter of 2013, prompting even more suspicion. Daines declared his candidacy on November 6, 2013. Baucus resigned from the Senate in February 2014 to become the United States’ ambassador to China. For the remainder of Baucus’ term, Democratic Governor Steve Bullock appointed lieutenant governor John Walsh to the empty Senate seat. Walsh had previously stated his desire to run for the Senate in 2014, and it was speculated that his appointment would give him an advantage over other candidates. On June 3, 2014, Daines defeated Missoula state legislator Champ Edmunds and political newcomer Susan Cundiff in the Republican primary, winning 83.4 percent of the vote. Walsh received 64 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary. Following the publishing of a New York Times storey accusing him of plagiarism in a thesis published as part of his master’s degree study at the US Army War College, Walsh withdrew from the race in August 2014. With barely 50 days to the election, the Montana Democratic Party held a special convention to select Butte lawmaker Amanda Curtis. Daines received 57.8% of the vote against Curtis’s 40.1 percent in the general election. In 2020, Daines was re-elected, beating Bullock with 55% of the vote. The election was one of the most costly Senate races in the 2020 cycle, with Democrats outspending Republicans by $19 million, $82–63 million. Before the 2021 Electoral College vote tally, Daines stated that he would protest to the electoral count being certified due to unproven accusations of voting fraud. When Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol, he was taking part in the certification. He tweeted during the incident “Any kind of violence or intimidation is unacceptable to me. This is really inappropriate.” During the attack, Daines changed his mind about opposing to the certification. “The damage and violence we saw at our Capitol today is an assault on our democracy, our Constitution, and the rule of law, and must not be accepted,” he said, calling the uprising “a terrible day for our country.” He urged a peaceful handover of power. The electoral board of the Billings Gazette demanded that Daines apologise to Joe Biden for his involvement in blocking the certification. In the aftermath of the assault, Daines dismissed demands for Trump to resign or be impeached. During the Biden administration, Daines attempted to obstruct the nomination of Deb Haaland for Interior Secretary.
