The football team of the University of South Carolina is known as the Gamecocks. The Gamecocks compete in the Southeastern Conference’s Eastern Division and the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision. Shane Beamer is the team’s coach. Williams-Brice Stadium is where they have their home games. The Gamecocks were a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference from 1953 through 1970, winning the ACC title in 1969 and finished 15th in the final AP poll in 1958. They were a significant independent from 1971 through 1991, producing George Rogers, the 1980 Heisman Trophy winner, six bowl games, and Final Top-25 rankings in 1984 and 1987. (AP No. 11 and No. 15). They’ve been in the Southeastern Conference since 1992, and in 2010 they won the SEC East division.
The professors protested that the crudeness of chants and cheers uttered by students at football games were not gentlemanly in tone, so the Board of Trustees forbade participation in football for the 1906 season. After hearing cries and receiving petitions from students and alumni alike, the Board of Trustees overturned their decision within months. In 1907, the game was reintroduced. That same year, a haphazardly organised football team captained by Board of Trustees member Douglas McKay competed in a brief season, winning all three games.John Neff of the University of Virginia was employed by South Carolina in 1910.
From 1912 through 1915, the team was led by Norman B. Edgerton. The team included 17-year-old A. B. Stoney.W. Rice Warren, a 1916 UVA graduate, was the team’s coach.Frank Dobson was the captain of the war-torn 1918 team, which finished 2–1–1. Coach Sol Metzger guided the 1921 team to a 5–12–2 record, with Billy Laval’s Furman being the only defeat. The 1925 and 1926 teams were coached by Branch Bocock.Billy Laval came to USC from Furman University in Columbia, South Carolina. To coach the Gamecocks, Laval agreed to a three-year contract at $8,000 per year, making him the state’s highest-paid coach.
He coached the Gamecocks to seven straight winning seasons and a 39–26–6 overall record from 1928 to 1934, including a perfect 3–0 Southern Conference season in 1933. Laval is one of only two football coaches in South Carolina to have seven straight winning seasons (Steve Spurrier is the other, from 2008-2014). The State magazine dubbed him “South Carolina’s greatest collegiate coach” in 2009. Laval departed USC after six seasons to coach at Emory and Henry College in a variety of sports, mainly owing to a disagreement with the USC athletics department over his contract.Williams-Brice Stadium saw its first season of usage in 1934. Previously, South Carolina’s home games were held on the campus of the university.
Before being replaced, Don McCallister commanded the Gamecocks for three years. 13–20–1 is his final record. Joe Morrison was named National Coach of the Year, Lou Holtz (2000) and Steve Spurrier (2005, 2010) were named SEC Coaches of the Year, and Paul Dietzel was named to the ACC Coach of the Year (1969). Former players George Rogers and Sterling Sharpe, as well as coaches Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier, have all been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. On December 6, 2015, Will Muschamp, the former defensive coordinator at Auburn and head coach at Florida, was named the new head coach of South Carolina.
With a 13–10 win over Vanderbilt, the Will Muschamp era began. Carolina won four of its final six regular-season games, including a 24–21 victory against 18th-ranked Tennessee, after starting the season 2–4. In the 2016 Birmingham Bowl, the Gamecocks were defeated 46–39 by South Florida in overtime. Muschamp coached the Gamecocks to a 9–4 record in 2017. In the Belk Kickoff Game in Charlotte, North Carolina, the season began with a neutral site win against NC State. South Carolina finished second in the SEC East after defeating five SEC teams in conference play: Florida, Tennessee, Missouri, Vanderbilt, and Arkansas. In the Outback Bowl, they defeated Michigan 26–19. Muschamp and the Gamecocks finished the 2018 season with a 7–5 overall record and a 28–0 loss to Virginia in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina. South Carolina went 4–8 in 2019, with a win over Georgia on the road.
Because to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, the 2020 season was limited to conference games only. With a win over then-No. 15 Auburn, the Gamecocks began off the season 2-2. After that, the Gamecocks dropped three straight games, surrendering 159 points in the process. After a 2-5 start to the 2020 season, Muschamp was fired as head coach on November 15, 2020, and interim head coach Mike Bobo was named. Ray Tanner, the athletic director at the University of South Carolina, announced the hiring of Shane Beamer as head coach on December 6, 2020.
Beamer coached the Gamecocks to a 7-6 record in 2021, including a 38-21 victory over North Carolina in the Duke Mayo Bowl. In terms of ticket sales, the rivalry is South Carolina’s most popular yearly sporting event. The Carolina-Clemson game was known as “Big Thursday” from 1896 to 1959 because it was played on the fairgrounds in Columbia, South Carolina. In 1960, both clubs’ home stadiums were used for the alternating-site format. The Palmetto Bowl is the name given to the yearly football game. It has 115 meetings, making it the 21st most popular college football rivalry. From 2009 to 2013, the Gamecocks won 5 in a row versus Clemson. Since then, Clemson has won 7 in a row and leads the series 72–42–4 all-time.
Due to Covid-19 Restrictions, the South Carolina Gamecocks were unable to face the Clemson Tigers in 2020. Since 1894, there’s been a “border rivalry.” George Rogers and Herschel Walker, who would later win the Heisman Trophy, faced off in the 1980 game. Georgia won 13–10 and went on to win the National Championship, thanks in part to Walker’s 219 rushing yards. During the game, Rogers rushed for 168 yards, laying the groundwork for a great senior season and eventual Heisman Trophy victory. Since 1997, the last 17 meetings between the two institutions have been broadcast nationally (6 on ESPN2, 5 on ESPN and 5 on CBS). Since joining the SEC in 1992, the series has become a lot more competitive.
As of the 2021 season, Georgia has a 53-19–2 advantage in the series. In 1903, a competition arose. The teams still meet on occasion, despite the fact that they are no longer a conference rivalry. South Carolina departed the ACC in 1971. The series was always played on a Thursday during the decade of the 2010s. USC and UNC will play every four years in 2019 and 2023, according to a September 2015 announcement. South Carolina has won seven of the past nine meetings, and North Carolina leads the all-time series 35–20–4 as of the 2021 season’s end. In support of the Wounded Warrior Project, USC wore a special uniform versus Florida during the 2009 season. This occurred against Auburn in 2011 and LSU in 2012.
USC unveiled new Under Armour jerseys before to the start of the 2013 season. The front shoulder stripes were shifted to the top of the shoulder. The jerseys have 11 stripes in all, which corresponds to the number of buildings on the university’s campus, including the national historic site The Horseshoe. Syvelle Newton was a multi-position player for the Gamecocks from 2003 to 2006, and he made a name for himself in the national record books. He became one of only four players in college football history to throw for 600 yards, carry for 600 yards, and catch for 600 yards in a single season. Newton threw for 2,474 yards (20 touchdowns, 13 interceptions) and ran for 786 yards (10 touchdowns) in four seasons (3 TD).
He also recorded 18 tackles and an assisted sack in limited defensive action, returning six kickoffs for 115 yards (19.2 average). The 2011 Gamecocks won the most games in a single season and ended in the Top 10 for the first time in programme history, thanks to Coach Spurrier’s leadership. USC finished No. 9/8 in the final AP and Coaches’ Polls after posting an 11–2 overall record, a 6–2 SEC record, and a Capital One Bowl victory (respectively). USC won games against Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, and Clemson along the road, extending its three-game winning streak over its fiercest rivals. USC also went 5–0 against SEC Eastern Division opponents for the first time. Spurrier’s Gamecocks finished 11–2 in 2012, with their only losses coming in consecutive weeks at LSU and Florida.
To finish the regular season, USC defeated Clemson 27–17 in Death Valley. They then defeated Michigan 33–28 in the 2013 Outback Bowl, with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Thompson to Bruce Ellington with under a minute left deciding the game. In the final AP and Coaches’ Polls, the Gamecocks were ranked No. 8/7. The 2013 Gamecocks finished 11–2 under Coach Spurrier’s leadership, with losses to Georgia and Tennessee. Vanderbilt, UCF, and Missouri, all ranked in the top 25, were among the notable victories. Carolina’s fifth consecutive win against their in-state foe, Clemson, ended the regular season 31–17. Carolina and Clemson were rated No. 10 and No. 6 respectively, making this the first Palmetto Bowl between two top ten teams.
South Carolina also went undefeated on their home field, Williams-Brice Stadium, for the second straight season. The Gamecocks had the nation’s longest home winning run at the time, with an 18-game winning streak stretching back to the 2011 season. In the 2014 Capital One Bowl, the squad defeated Wisconsin 34–24, capping off a successful season. The Gamecocks finished fourth in both the final AP and Coaches’ rankings, earning the program’s first top-five finish.
