Russell Westbrook III (born November 12, 1988) is an NBA player for the Los Angeles Lakers (NBA). He is a nine-time NBA All-Star and the 2016–17 NBA Most Valuable Player. He has also been named to the NBA All-Star Team nine times, leading the league in scoring in 2014–15 and 2016–17, and won the NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award back-to-back years in 2015 and 2016.
Westbrook became one of only two players in NBA history to average a triple-double in a season in 2017, the year he earned the league MVP award, alongside Oscar Robertson in 1962. With 42 triple-doubles in a season, he also set a record. Over the next two seasons, he averaged a triple-double, led the league in assists, and became the first player in league history to lead the league in both points and assists in consecutive seasons.
For the fourth time in five seasons, he averaged a triple-double in 2020–21. On May 10, 2021, he overtook Robertson as the NBA’s all-time leader in triple-doubles. Westbrook has the lowest lifetime three-point percentage among NBA players with over 2500 three-point attempts.
Westbrook began his high school career as a point guard, standing only 5 feet 8 inches (1.73 metres) tall and weighing only 140 pounds (64 kg), despite having huge (size 14) feet. Westbrook did not join his high school’s varsity squad until his junior year, and he did not receive his first college recruiting letter until the summer before his senior year, when he reached his adult height of 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 metres).
Westbrook led the Thunder to a 25–4 record in his senior year, averaging 25.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.1 steals, and 2.3 assists. During the same season, he had 14 double-doubles, eight 30-point games, and a career-high 51 points on January 6, 2006 against Carson. Top college basketball programmes were initially uninterested in Westbrook.
Coach Ben Howland encouraged him to play for the UCLA Bruins as his height increased, allowing him to average more than 25 points per game and develop into a viable college basketball prospect. During his time at UCLA, Westbrook wore the number zero. He was mostly employed as a defender and energy player off the bench as a freshman in 2006–07.
He was a backup to Darren Collison as a freshman. During the season, Westbrook averaged 3.4 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.7 assists. Collison was injured the following season, and Westbrook took over as the starting point guard. He averaged 12.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.6 steals over the course of the season. He was named All-Pac-10 Third Team and Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year at the conclusion of the season.
Each of Westbrook’s seasons with UCLA ended in a Final Four appearance. They were defeated 76–66 by eventual national champion Florida in 2007 and 78–63 by Memphis in 2008. Westbrook decided to forego his last two years at UCLA and join the NBA Draft in 2008. Westbrook was chosen for the NBA All-Star Game for the second consecutive year.
He had a 23.2 point, 7.4 assist, 5.2 rebound, and 1.8 steals per game average in the 2012–13 season. Westbrook was instrumental in helping the Oklahoma City Thunder reach the Western Conference playoffs and earn the first seed. In the first round, they would meet the eighth-seeded Houston Rockets. When Rockets guard Patrick Beverley collided with Westbrook in an attempt to steal the ball on April 25, 2013, in the second game of the series, Westbrook hurt his right knee.
Despite the fact that Westbrook’s injury was visibly bothering him, he continued to play and scored 29 points in the game. He experienced a minor tear in his right meniscus, which was discovered the next day. On April 27, 2013, he underwent surgery and was ruled out for the remainder of the postseason. The Thunder beat the Rockets in six games without Westbrook, but lost in five games to the Memphis Grizzlies in the next round.
For the third consecutive year, Westbrook was chosen to the NBA Second Team. On April 17, Westbrook recorded his 25th triple-double of the season in a win against the Detroit Pistons, becoming the first NBA player to record at least 25 triple-doubles in four consecutive seasons and the first in league history to have 15 triple-doubles in a 20-game stretch.
Westbrook finished the month with 14 triple-doubles (in 17 games), shattering Wilt Chamberlain’s record of 11 set in 1968. Westbrook became the first player since Chamberlain in 1968 to score 300 points, 150 assists, and 150 rebounds in consecutive months with his exploits in March and April. After plummeting to a season-low 15 games under.500 on April 5, his play coincided with the Wizards going 12–2 to conclude the month.
With 14 points, a career-high 21 rebounds, and a new season-high 24 assists in a 154–141 win against the Pacers on May 4, Westbrook clinched his fourth season averaging a triple-double.On May 8, he tied Robertson for the most career triple-doubles in NBA history with 33 points, 19 rebounds, and 15 assists in a 133–132 overtime victory over the Pacers.
In a 125–124 loss against the Atlanta Hawks on May 10, he recorded his 182nd career triple-double, passing Robertson for the most in NBA history; Westbrook also joined Robertson, LeBron James, and Gary Payton as the only four players with at least 20,000 points and 8,000 assists. The Wizards completed their turnaround from 17–32 to 33–38 and clinched a play-in position on May 15, when they defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 120–105.
Westbrook had another triple double with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and 17 assists. The Wizards concluded the season with a 34–38 record and were seeded 8th, facing the 7th seeded Boston Celtics in the play-in, courtesy to a 17–6 record over the last six weeks, in a 115–110 win against the Charlotte Hornets on May 16.
Westbrook won his third NBA assist title, averaging a career-high 11.7 assists per game, after producing a triple double of 23 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists. Westbrook also averaged 22.2 points on 43.9 percent shooting and 11.5 rebounds, both career highs; the Wizards finished the season with a 23–15 record when Westbrook had a triple-double.
Following a 118–100 loss to the Celtics for the No. 7 seed in the play-in round, Westbrook and Bradley Beal led the Wizards to a 142–115 thrashing of the Pacers to clinch the final playoff slot and the team’s first appearance in the postseason since 2018. Westbrook has reached the playoffs for the sixth consecutive year.
