Ottawa Senators, a National Hockey League (NHL) franchise based in Ottawa that competes in the Eastern Conference (NHL). Previously, the Senators had only claimed one title in the Eastern Conference (2007).

To commemorate their founding year and a previous Ottawa-based hockey team that claimed 11 Stanley Cup titles between 1903 and 1927, the Senators made their NHL debut as an expansion franchise in 1992. Following a run of four straight last-place divisional finishes, the newest Senators team took over. It wasn’t until the 1996–97 season that Ottawa made its first trip to the playoffs, where it was eliminated by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round.

It was the Senators’ first postseason series win in franchise history when, after being ranked last in the Eastern Conference, they defeated the top-seeded New Jersey Devils in six games. Despite winning the Canadian Division in 1998–99, the Sabres knocked Ottawa out of the playoffs early on. Beginning with the 1998–99 season, the Senators won four division titles before going on to lose in the playoffs to a lower-seeded team over the next seven years.

The Senators earned their 10th consecutive postseason spot in 2006–07, thanks to a strong line featuring Alfredsson, left-wing Dany Heatley, and centre Jason Spezza. The Senators made their first trip to the Stanley Cup finals that season, where they fell to the Anaheim Ducks in five games after beating the Pittsburgh Penguins, New Jersey Devils, and Buffalo Sabres.

It ended in 2008-09 for Ottawa, but the Senators were back in the playoffs in 2009-10. After a few years with mediocre records and infrequent playoff appearances, the team never made it past the second round of the playoffs in the decade that began in 2010. Sens standout Erik Karlsson led Ottawa to the Eastern Conference finals in 2016-17, where they fell to the Pittsburgh Penguins in double overtime of game seven. However, the team’s rise was short-lived, as they won 16 fewer games and fell outside of the playoff picture in 2017–18.

Dominik Haek, a Czech ice hockey goaltender notable for his unconventional technique, was born on January 29, 1965, in Pardubice, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic). No other goaltender in NHL history has won consecutive Hart Trophy honours as the league’s most valuable player back-to-back years (1997–98).

At the age of six, Haek moved to Pardubice and began playing ice hockey. Remarkably adaptable in goal, his technique included diving to the ground and splaying his arms and legs wide apart to block shots that most goaltenders would have been unable to save. From 1986 until 1990, he represented Czechoslovakia at the international level as goalkeeper of the year, winning the Czechoslovak title each year. In 1987, 1989, and 1990, he was named Czechoslovakian player of the year for his contributions to the game.

Even though Haek was drafted into the NHL in the 10th round in 1983, he didn’t leave Czechoslovakia until after the Velvet Revolution in 1989. He debuted in the NHL in 1990 with the Chicago Blackhawks, but he saw little action and was traded to the Buffalo Sabres two years later. After an injured goaltender forced him to fill in, he went on to record five shutouts in December 1993. By the end of the season, he was widely regarded as the top goaltender in the NHL, with a GAA of 1.95, the lowest in the league since 1973–74.

Over the next decade, Haek was consistently the best goaltender in the league in terms of save percentage and shutouts. He won the Vezina Trophy six times between 1994 and 2001 as the best NHL goaltender. In 1997 and 1998, he was the recipient of the Hart Award. During the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan, Hayek was the Czech Republic’s star goaltender, posting a GAA of 0.97. After joining the Detroit Red Wings in 2001, he helped them win the Stanley Cup in 2002.

The Senators made their NHL debut as an expansion franchise in 1992 to celebrate their foundation year and a former Ottawa-based hockey team that won 11 Stanley Cups between 1903 and 1927. The Senators were founded in Ottawa in 1903 and played their first season in the NHL in 1992. A streak of four consecutive last-place divisional finishes ended with the emergence of the Senators’ newest roster. It wasn’t until the 1996–97 season that the Senators made their first appearance in the postseason, where they were eliminated by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round of the playoffs.

Following a season in which they finished last in the Eastern Conference, the Senators earned their first postseason series victory in team history when they defeated the top-seeded New Jersey Devils in six games. Although the Sabres won the Canadian Division in 1998–99, the team was eliminated from the playoffs early by the Senators. For seven seasons, starting with the 1998–99 season, the Senators won four division titles before falling in a first-round playoff series to a lower-seeded team in the Eastern Conference.

Alfredsson, left wing Dany Heatley, and centre Jason Spezza formed a powerful line that helped the Senators qualify for their 10th consecutive postseason appearance in 2006–07. During that season, the Senators made their first trip to the Stanley Cup finals, where they were defeated by the Anaheim Ducks in five games after defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins, New Jersey Devils, and Buffalo Sabres along the way.

Ottawa’s playoff run came to an end in 2008-09, but the Senators returned to the postseason in 2009-10. In the decade that began in 2010, after a few years of poor records and few postseason appearances, the team failed to advance farther than the second round of the playoffs. Erik Karlsson, a star forward for the Ottawa Senators, guided the team to the Eastern Conference finals in 2016-17, where they were defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins in double overtime of game seven. However, the team’s ascent was short-lived, as they finished the season with 16 fewer victories and finished outside of the playoff picture.

A native of Pardubice in Czechoslovakia, Dominik Haek is a goaltender who is known for his unusual technique. He was born on January 29, 1965, in Pardubice, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic). There has never been another goaltender in NHL history who has won the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player in back-to-back seasons (1997) and 1998 (1998).

Haek went to Pardubice with his family when he was six years old and began playing ice hockey. His goaltending method includes diving to the ground and splaying his arms and legs wide apart to block shots that most goaltenders would have been unable to stop otherwise. Every year between 1986 and 1990 he represented Czechoslovakia at the international level as goalie of the year, winning both the Czechoslovak and international titles in the process. In recognition of his contributions to the game, he was selected Czechoslovakian player of the year in 1987, 1989, and 1990, respectively.

He didn’t leave Czechoslovakia until 1989, even though he was selected by the NHL in the 10th round in 1983. He was a member of the Czech national team during the Velvet Revolution in 1989. He made his NHL debut with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1990, but he didn’t get much playing time and was eventually traded to the Buffalo Sabres two years later. After being obliged to stand in for an injured goalkeeper in December 1993, he went on to record five shutouts in the month. After finishing the season with a 1.95 goals-against average, he was largely recognised as the best goaltender in the NHL. His GAA was the lowest in the league since 1973–74.

The following decade, Haek was the top goaltender in the league in terms of save % and shutouts, and he was consistently the best goaltender in the world. Between 1994 and 2001, he was named the best goaltender in the NHL six times, earning him the Vezina Trophy. He was the laureate of the Hart Award in 1997 and 1998, respectively. Hayek was the outstanding goalkeeper for the Czech Republic at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan, earning a GAA of 0.97 during the competition. After joining the Detroit Red Wings in 2001, he was instrumental in the team’s Stanley Cup victory the following year.
