The University of Oklahoma’s football team, the Oklahoma Sooners, is a collegiate football team that represents the university (variously “Oklahoma” or “OU”). The squad competes in the Big 12 Conference, which is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (previously Division I-A) (NCAA). The programme debuted in 1895 and has been one of the most successful in the modern era, with 606 wins and a winning percentage of.762 since 1945.

Seven national championships, 50 conference championships, 162 First Team All-Americans (82 consensus), and seven Heisman Trophy winners are among the program’s achievements. The institution has also had 23 people (five coaches and 18 players) inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame[7] and owns the longest winning streak in Division I history with 47 victories. Oklahoma is also the only programme with four coaches who have won 100 games or more. When they defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders on September 28, 2019, they became the sixth NCAA FBS team to win 900 games.

The Sooners play their home games in Norman, Oklahoma’s Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Brent Venables has been the head coach since the year 2022.While expressing interest in joining the Southeastern Conference (SEC), the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas sent a joint letter of intent to the Big 12 Conference on July 26, 2021, stating that their media contracts with the conference, which are set to expire after the 2024–25 season, will not be extended.

Oklahoma and Texas, on the other hand, might join the SEC as early as the 2022 season, potentially paying an early termination cost of about $80 million from each institution for ending their contracts with the Big 12 conference before the contract expires.Little Red, who was never an official mascot, first appeared at games in 1953. Randy Palmer played him as an Indian who wore red tights, a breech cloth, and a war hat.

Little Red was expelled from Oklahoma by President John Herbert Hollomon, Jr. in April 1970. Little Red was barred from attending Sooner games after a temporary restraining order was issued by the student court.  Despite this, Palmer dressed up as Little Red for the 1970 season opening, and the audience erupted in applause. No one turned up for tryouts to replace Palmer after he was drafted after the 1971 season.

The Sooner Schooner, a conestoga waggon akin to the primary mode of transportation utilised by early settlers in Oklahoma, is the state’s mascot. Boomer and Sooner, two white ponies, are in charge of the Schooner. In 2005, the university developed two costumed mascots, Boomer and Sooner, to serve as mascots for football games and other events where a covered waggon is not permitted. The Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, often known as The Palace on the Prairie, is where the Sooners play their home games.

The stadium was previously known as Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, but the administration opted to add ‘Gaylord Family’ to honour Edward K. Gaylord and his family’s contributions over the years (estimated at more than $50 million).  Owen Field is named after Bennie Owen, the coach of the Oklahoma Sooners from 1905 through 1926. The stadium was completed in 1923 and had a capacity of 500 people at the time.  In 1925, 16,000 further seats were built, and in 1929, another 16,000 seats were added, bringing the total capacity to 32,000.

For the majority of its existence, the stadium has had a natural grass playing field. From 1970 to 1994, the stadium had artificial turf. A new upper deck was erected to the east side of the stadium in 2003, bringing the total number of seats to over 8,400. The official seating capacity of the stadium, following renovations in 2015, is 83,489. which makes it the 15th largest collegiate stadium in the U.S. and second largest in the Big 12 Conference.

Despite the stated capacity, the Sooners consistently sell out, with the most recent season’s attendance of 86,735 fans. On November 11, 2017, versus TCU, the greatest crowd ever was 88,308 people. Brent Venables, the current head coach, was hired on December 5, 2021, after the team had gone through 23 head coaches.  In 1895, Oklahoma became the first state to organise football, earning the nickname Sooners.

The Sooners have appeared in over 1,100 games over the course of 96 seasons.  Tom Stidham, Jim Tatum, Bud Wilkinson, Gomer Jones, Chuck Fairbanks, Barry Switzer, Gary Gibbs, Bob Stoops, and Lincoln Riley have all directed the Sooners to playoff bowl games during those seasons. Bennie Owen, Stidham, Dewey Luster, Tatum, Wilkinson, Fairbanks, Switzer, Stoops, and Riley are among the nine coaches who have led the Sooners to conference titles.

Owen holds the record for most games coached and years coached, while Switzer holds the record for highest winning percentage. Bob Stoops has the most victories. John Harts is the poorest coach the Sooners have ever had in terms of winning %; he lost the single game he coached, giving him a.000 winning percentage. With a.353 winning %, John Blake has the lowest winning percentage among those who have coached more than one game.

Owen, Lawrence Jones, Tatum, Wilkinson, Switzer, and Stoops are among the 23 Oklahoma coaches who have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fam At least one organisation has recognised Wilkinson, Switzer, and Stoops as National Coaches of the Year.Due to the spread of COVID-19, former US President Donald J. Trump closed the US border to European travel in March of 2020. (SARS-CoV-2).

COVID-19 was officially declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11, 2020,causing mandatory shelter-in-place orders, the suspension of in-person work and schooling, and other quarantine measures that changed modern socio-economic standards. While the COVID-19 pandemic cast a dark cloud over the 2020 NCAA College Football season, the NCAA left it up to the conferences and individual institutions to decide whether or not to participate.

Though several conferences (e.g., the Big 10 Conference) soon decided to cancel the 2020 college football season, a wave of player, fan, and coach support, combined with several leagues electing to play, led to FBS conferences participating, albeit in varied shortened forms. Athletic departments were required to implement severe procedures to protect player safety as protocols and awareness of COVID-19 evolved on a daily basis.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic’s medical and administrative chaos, the Sooners were able to play a shortened season that included an out-of-conference game versus FCS Western Carolina and a 9-game conference schedule. Riley guided the Sooners to their first 1-2 start since 2016 and only their third since 2000, relying on redshirt freshman quarterback Spencer Rattler.

This was also the first time the Sooners have started league play 0-2 (losses to Kansas State and Iowa State) since 1998, the final year of the John Blake era. Riley and the Sooners regained control of their season with a win in the annual rivalry game against Texas, thanks to the return of important talent on both sides of the ball. Until November of 2021, the Sooners would not lose another game.

The Sooners ended the regular season with a 7-2 record (the game against West Virginia was cancelled due to COVID-19 difficulties with their team) with a chance to win their sixth consecutive Big 12 Championship Game in 2020. The Sooners earned a bid to the 2020 Cotton Bowl Classic by defeating the Florida Gators 55–20 in that game.

In the world of collegiate sports, the year 2021 will be remembered as the year NIL and the 1-Time Transfer Exception reached their peak. Riley announced his departure to become the head coach of USC after a loss to Oklahoma State in the 2021 Bedlam Rivalry. For the team’s post-season Alamo Bowl appearance, interim head coach Bob Stoops was named. Brent Venables was hired the Oklahoma Sooners’ 23rd head coach on December 5, 2021. Venables previously worked at Clemson University as an associate head coach (2018–2021), defensive coordinator, and linebackers coach (2012–2021).

From 1999 through 2011, Venables worked as an assistant coach for the Oklahoma Sooners under former head coach Bob Stoops. “Boomer Sooner” is the Sooners’ official fight song. This song is sung regularly at football games and is played by the band after touchdowns, field goals, after major plays, and when the team or fans need a boost of energy. Another school song that is played after an extra point and as the Sooner Schooner arrives on the field is “OK Oklahoma.”

The “OU Chant,” which is shouted by OU fans before sporting events and other ceremonial occasions, is the official Alma Mater song. The state song “Oklahoma” and “Fight for OKU” are two other songs that are regularly heard at OU football games. The Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band, founded in 1904, is a nationally recognised ensemble. The band is the largest student organisation on campus, performing at all home games and travelling to other games on a regular basis.

The band is holding a game ball from the 1983 Bedlam Series game, when “the Pride” triumphed. Several publications publish lists of their ideal “team” every year. All-Americans are the athletes who appear on these lists. There are five All-American lists recognised by the NCAA. The Associated Press, the American Football Coaches Association, the Football Writers Association of America, The Sporting News, and the Walter Camp Football Foundation are the organisations in question.

Some of them have different tiers, such as first-team All-American, second-team All-American, and third-team All-American. A consensus All-American is established using a point system: three points for first-team selection, two points for second-team selection, and one point for third-team selection.  Oklahoma has had 162 First Team All-Americans in its history (80 consensus).
