Michael Sheehan Bradley (born July 31, 1987) is an American professional soccer player who currently plays as a midfielder for Toronto FC in Major League Soccer and previously captained the United States national team.In 2004, he made his Major League Soccer debut with the MetroStars, the son of soccer coach Bob Bradley. He then spent several years in Europe, playing for Heerenveen, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Aston Villa, and Chievo and Roma in the Dutch Eredivisie, German Bundesliga, English Premier League, and Italian Serie A.

In 2014, he returned to Major League Soccer with Toronto FC, where he appeared in over 250 games and won the MLS Cup in 2017.Bradley has played for the United States men’s national soccer team over 150 times since his debut in 2006. He played in five CONCACAF Gold Cups and two FIFA World Cups, winning two of the former and finishing runner-up in the latter.

Bradley was born in Princeton, New Jersey, to Bob Bradley, a former US national team coach and current Los Angeles FC coach. The family lived in Pennington, New Jersey, while his father was the head soccer coach at Princeton. While his father coached the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer (MLS), Michael spent his teenage years in Palatine, Illinois, where he grew up playing for Sockers FC, which finished third in the 2002 National Championships.

From 2002 to 2004, he spent four semesters at the United States Under-17 Men’s National Team Residency Program in Bradenton, Florida, which serves as a dedicated training facility for the under-17 national team. He admired Manchester United and Republic of Ireland midfielder Roy Keane as a child. Bradley scored the second goal against Egypt off an assist from Landon Donovan during the United States’ surprise run to the final of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, advancing the Americans to the semi-final on goal differential after beating Egypt 3–0.

In the semi-final, he started the 2–0 upset victory over Spain, but was sent off late in the game. Bradley was so barred from competing in the tournament final, which the United States lost 3–2 to Brazil. Following the match, Bradley was said to have attacked referee Jorge Larrionda, earning him a three-match suspension for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Bradley started all four matches for the United States at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He equalised in a 2–2 draw with Slovenia in the group stage.  In an August 10, 2010 friendly against Brazil in his hometown of New Jersey, he made his debut as captain of the national team. Bradley scored the opening goal in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup final against Mexico, albeit the US lost 4–2.

After the Gold Cup defeat, Bob Bradley was ousted as national team coach and replaced by Jürgen Klinsmann, under whom Michael continued to play a crucial role in midfield. At the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, he started every game for the USA. Clint Dempsey was stripped of his captaincy by US Soccer as a result of a contentious altercation with a referee before to the 2015 Gold Cup, and Klinsmann chose Bradley as the new permanent captain of the national team.

Bradley, who is 27 years old, got his 100th cap in the opening game against Honduras on July 7. Bradley played in the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup final, which the US lost by a single goal against Mexico on July 7, 2019. After Cobi Jones and Landon Donovan, he was the third American to reach 150 caps. Bradley is a hardworking, intelligent, and physically imposing right-footed player who has played in the center,in a holding role, in a box-to-box role,] in the hole, and even in a more withdrawn creative role as a deep-lying playmaker.

His tenacity, ball-winning abilities, energy, tactical intelligence, and positional sense enable him to recover the ball and transition quickly from defence to attack by making forward runs, while his vision and range of passing allow him to dictate the tempo of his team’s play in midfield or create goalscoring opportunities after regaining possession.

He is well-known for his communication and leadership qualities, in addition to his stamina and playing ability.  On rare occasions, he has also played as a central defender. Bradley is fluent in English, Italian, Dutch, German, and Spanish, among other languages. He married Amanda, a former tennis player for the University of Rhode Island. The couple has two children, a son born in 2012 and a daughter born in 2014.

In the 2016 Eastern Conference Finals, Bradley captained Toronto FC and scored once in a derby against Montreal Impact, which Toronto won 7–5 on aggregate to advance to the MLS Cup Final for the first time. [27] Following a goalless tie after extra time in which Seattle had no shots on target, Toronto lost the final 5–4 in a penalty shoot-out at home on December 10, 2016, after Bradley missed Toronto’s second penalty.

With the arrival of Spanish playmaker Victor Vázquez in midfield at the start of the 2017 season, there was less of a burden placed on Bradley and star forward Sebastian Giovinco to create goalscoring opportunities for Toronto; additionally, Greg Vanney’s switch in tactics from a 4–4–2 diamond to a 3–5–2 formation often saw Bradley occupy more of a supporting role in midfield, freeing the Spaniard to take on the majority of playmaking duties, although the mid

Toronto won the 2017 Canadian Championship title for the second straight season on June 27, defeating Montreal 2–1 at home in the second leg of the final, 3–2 on aggregate.  Bradley earned his first Supporters’ Shield on September 30, 2017, when he led the league with the most points with a 4–2 home win over the New York Red Bulls.

On December 9, 2017, Bradley assisted Toronto to a 2–0 win over Seattle in the 2017 MLS Cup at BMO Field, completing an unprecedented domestic treble for the team. fter losing 2–1 at home against Guadalajara in the first leg of the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League Finals on April 18, Toronto won 2–1 away in the return leg on April 25, sending the game to a penalty shoot-out, which Toronto lost 4–2.

Bradley scored a brace in Toronto FC’s 3–1 away triumph against Philadelphia Union to start the regular Major League Soccer season on March 2, 2019.On November 10, he made his 200th appearance for the team in the 2019 MLS Cup Final, a 3–1 loss against Seattle Sounders. He had ankle surgery at the start of the 2020 season and was expected to lose a significant amount of time.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic stopping the MLS season, he only missed two games and was able to compete in the MLS is Back Tournament after the league resumed.
