Los Angeles Lakers, a professional team based in Los Angeles. The Lakers are one of the best-known professional franchises in all US sports. The franchise has won a combined total of 18 titles of the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Lakers franchise was established in 1946 as the Detroit Gems and played in the National Basketball League (NBL). In 1947, the team moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, and changed its name to Lakers to reflect the nickname of Minnesota’s state, “Land of 10,000 Lake” In the same year the Lakers acquired George Mikan, who became the first dominant “big man” of professional basketball in a series of large Laker centers.

The Lakers joined the 1948–49 season of the BAA (NBA’s official precursor) and won the final BAA Championships. NBA was established in 1949, and Mikan and the Lakers – which also included the future Hall of Famers Jim Pollard, Slater Martin, Vern Mikkelsen, and (since 1953) Clyde Lovellette – won four of its first 5 league championships and established the first dynasty of professional basketball. The presence of Mikan in Lakers fell in 1956 and the team moved to Los Angeles in the run-up to the 1960-1961 season. Six times in the 1960s, the Lakers advanced to the NBA final but lost to the Celtics in every appearance despite the presence of the all-time greats Elgin Baylor and Jerry West (later assembled as the General Manager of the Team by several Lakers Championship Teams).

During 1971-72, however, the Lakers – led by West, Gail Goodrich, and Wilt Chamberlain – established their NBA record for the NBA championship, the team’s first title since its relocation to Los Angeles, for the longest winning streak (33 games). In 1972-73 the Lakers returned to the finals but were lost to the New York Knicks. After that season Chamberlain retired and the fortunes of the team worsened because the Lakers had for the first time in franchise history missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons in 1974–75 and 1975–76.

In the first picture of the 1979 NBA draught, the Lakers entered the most dominant period in their franchise history. Johnson teamed up with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and (from 1982) James Worthy for eight NBA finals over the next ten years, which led to five NBA championships (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988). This period has not only been regarded as the “Showtime” because of the flashy, sometimes spectacular playful manner of Johnson and polished head coach Pat Riley but especially Jack Nicholson, who is also a court-sided Hollywood celebrity. The revived rivalry between Lakers and Celtics – the two NBA titles teams in 1984, 1985, and 1987 and more precisely Johnson’s fights against Larry Bird of Baston – also brought NBA to a new level of popularity in the 1980s.

Following the retirement of Abdul Jabbar in 1989 and Johnson’s in 1991, the fortunes of the Lakers became worse. The club reached playoffs regularly—the Lakers missed just five times in their first 60 seasons—but did not reach the NBA Finals for the longest span in franchise history. This changed during the 1999-2000 season though when newly recruited CEO Phil Jackson led the Lakers in the first of three straight championships starring Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant. O’Neal was moved in 2004, but the Laker Team re-configured with Bryant as the main focus of the NBA championship in 2008, which they lost to Boston in six games. The Lakers returned to the finals the next season, which routed the Orlando Magic to claim the 15th title of the club in five matches. In the 2009–10 season, the Lakers played their third in a row, defying the Celtics in a thrilling seven-game series.

The Lakers then began a period of relative failure and in 2012-2013 they achieved their peak. The club acquired permanent All-Star Steve Nash and Dwight Howard to the preseason and was considered one of the favorites to win the title, but they stumbled into an uneven, injury-stricken campaign which concluded with a first-round playoff. Howard departed for a free agent during the offseason and both Bryant and Nash failed to suffer injuries much of the following season, which contributed significantly to the Lakers’ losing record in 2013–14. Bryant missed another injury for much of the following season and the Lakers struggled to reach a record of 21–61. In 2015-16, the club was much poorer, finishing 17-65 in Bryant’s last season before his retirement.

Nine victories improved the club’s record by 2016-2017, but an extension of the Lakers’ franchise-record postseason drought to four seasons led to a shake-up at the front office, which included Magic Johnson’s taking over as a team chairman. In the 2018 hi-season, Johnson managed to pull superstar free agency, LeBron James, to the Lakers, but his club has not improved much and he left suddenly before the conclusion of the 2018–19 season. The next year was turbulent. In January 2020 Bryant was among those killed in the helicopter accident, while the NBA banned the epidemic less than two months later. The season was restarted in July but abbreviated and the players were mainly isolated in a bubble. Backed by James, who was called the MVP finals, the Lakers finally won the NBA title at the Miami Heat.
