Los Angeles Clippers, a professional team of professionals located in Los Angeles that play in the National Basketball Association Western Conference (NBA). Originally located in Buffalo, New York, the club was called the Buffalo Braves upon entering the NBA in 1970 along with fellow Cleveland Cavaliers and Portland Trail Blazers expansion franchises. The Braves recorded records for the first three seasons before three straight winning campaigns, which also led to playoff posting behind the outstanding performance of guard-forwards Randy Smith and future center-forwards Hall of Fame Bob McAdoo.

The Braves were part of an unprecedented franchise transfer in 1978, when Irv Levin, the Californian owner of the Boston Celtics, sought to relocate the Celtic people back to his country but the NBA stopped them. The Braves owner John Y. Brown, as a compromise, swapped franchise with Levin, who moved his new club to San Diego for the 1978–79 season. The club was also known as the San Diego Clippers and throughout its six-year tenure in the city was one of the poorest teams in the league, ending either at last time or at second place each season.

In 1981, the Clippers were sold to Donald Sterling, a LA billionaire, who in 1984 relocated the club to his hometown. The club wasn’t stronger in its new home and each season is finished with a losing record between 1984–85 and 1990–91. In 1991–92 the Clippers, headed by Danny Manning, had a record of 45–37 and made it to the playoffs of the Western Conference, where they lost in their first round of play. After a regular season of 500 following year, the club lost its post-season opener series again. In 1993–94, the Clippers reverted to lost ways, which led to the club placing eight times in 11 seasons until 2003–04.

A glimmer of hope for Clippers supporters arrived in 2005–06, when a promising group with Elton Brand and the Chris Kaman center won 47 games and moved on to the second playoffs round, but lost a seven-game series against the Phoenix Suns. Even this modest triumph was short-lived, as two years later the crew returned to the bottom position in the division. The Clippers owned by Sterling were frequently regarded as the worst club in professional team sports in North America, with just two winning seasons in the 27 years that followed in 1984 when he moved to Los Angeles.

In club history just before the 2011–12 season, the Clippers made the most significant improvement attempt when the organization traded for superstar point guard Chris Paul. That season Paul and rookie All-Star power forward Blake Griffin combined to help the Clipper go to the semi-finals of the conference. The Clippers improved the results of the regular season in 2012–13 and recorded 56 victories at the same time and the first championship of the division in club history, but fell during the first round of the post-season. This playoff defeat led to a change in training and during the off-season, Doc Rivers, who trained the Boston Celtics in the NBA title in 2007-2008, was brought in. In the next season, Rivers led the Clippers to a new record for most winning franchises (57) and a championship in the second division.

During the first round of the 2013–14 playoffs, the Clippers organization became disarrayed after an audiotape was released including racist remarks by Sterling, who had a long history of dubious races and faced a range of lawsuits claiming discrimination in housing. The league then took the extraordinary step of barring an NBA owner from lifetime association with his club or the league. There followed a series of legal struggles between Sterling, his wife, and the NBA.

Sterling’s wife eventually sold the team to a businessman, Steve Ballmer, for $2 billion in August 2014 (a record for the North American sports franchise at the time) after Sterling was removed from his position with majority-owned rights when after signs of Alzheimer’s disease he was mentally disabled. The Clippers had another good record in the 2014–2015 regular season and won a thrilling seven-game series for the first round of post-season championship San Antonio Spurs to finish their campaign in disillusionment after a three-game lead in the following round of the Houston Rockets.

In 2015-16, the team posted its fourth straight campaign with at least 50 victories but a disaster was experienced during the playoffs when Paul and Griffin had their fourth post-season injuries, and Los Angeles did not move further after the opening round of the playoffs. The Clippers’ fourth post-season game. In 2016–17 the Clippers had a new 50-win season and faltered in the playoffs, a defeat of seven games in the first round. This elimination was historical since the Clippers became the first club in the history of the NBA to lose the series that they had led for five consecutive seasons.

Paul departed the club in the next off-season, while Griffin was moved months after signing a contract extension. The six-season postseason run of the Clippers came to an end in 2017–18. Surprisingly, a Clippers squad made up of career players re-entered playoffs in 2018-19, when the reigning champion, Golden State Warriors, defeated Los Angeles in a battling opening series.
