Lamar Alexander (born July 3, 1940 in Maryville, Tennessee, United States), is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican in 2002 and took office the following year.
Alexander was born in Maryville, the son of a teacher and elementary school principal. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a bachelor’s degree in Latin American studies in 1962. He served as a clerk to the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans after getting a law degree from New York University in 1965. He later worked as an assistant to US Senator Howard Baker and in President Richard Nixon’s administration as an assistant to the president’s executive assistant. Alexander married Honey Buhler in 1969, and the couple went on to have four children. He returned to Tennessee the next year to organise Winfield Dunn’s gubernatorial campaign, the state’s first Republican governor in half a century. Alexander then cofounded a Nashville legal business in 1972.
Alexander ran for governor on his own in 1974. Alexander’s campaign, however, suffered as a result of his relationship with Nixon, who resigned in August of that year as a result of the Watergate affair, and he eventually lost the race. In 1978, he ran again and won. Alexander was recognised for initiating education reforms and encouraging industry in the state during his two tenure as governor (1979–87). He cofounded (1987) a chain of children’s day care centres after leaving office. He also spent a brief period of time in Australia prior to becoming president of the University of Tennessee system in 1988. He resigned from that position in 1991 to serve as Secretary of Education in President George H.W. Bush’s administration.
Alexander unsuccessfully ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 1996 and 2000. In 2002, he ran for the United States Senate and won with 54% of the vote, becoming Tennessee’s first governor and senator.
Alexander established himself as a moderate to conservative Republican with a reputation for collaboration after being elected to the Senate in 2003. He was primarily engaged in education issues, but shifted toward a states’ rights perspective on educational standards. Later in his career, he authored the Every Student Succeeds Act (2015), which amended No Child Left Behind (2001) to allow states greater power over public education concerns. Alexander also gained a prominent role in energy policy.
He chaired the Senate Republican Conference from 2008 to 2012, the third-ranking Republican position in that legislature. He also advocated for filibuster reform, most notably advocating that it be prohibited for Supreme Court and other high-level federal government candidates. In that capacity, he played a pivotal role in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act negotiations (2010; PPACA). Although he backed a failed repeal and replace campaign in 2017, he was later active in a bipartisan push to shore up the PPACA. Alexander declared in 2018 that he would not run for reelection in 2020.
Alexander authored many books, including Six Months Off: An American Family’s Australian Adventure (1988) and Lamar Alexander’s Little Plaid Book (1998), in which he explored running for government and urged readers to serve in the public sector.
