June Lockhart was born to Gene Lockhart and Kathleen Arthur Lockhart on June 25, 1925, in New York. Her mother was a renowned British American actress and her father was an actor, a singer, and a songwriter who also appeared on Broadway. In California, June grew up and graduated from Westlake Girls School in Beverly Hills.

She had two sons, Anne Kathleen and June Elizabeth, and was married to ‘Dr. John F. Maloney’ from 1951 to 1959. From 1959 through 1970, she was married to her second husband ‘John Lindsay.’ Since her parents worked in the film industry, June was a child actor with many film parts. In her 1938 film ‘A Christmas Carol,’ wherein her parents played in prominent parts, she made her debut.

June Lockhart was awarded her first significant film part in the ‘She-Wolf of London’ crime noir in 1946. In ‘T-Men’ she was seen in the following year as Mary Genaro and in ‘Bury Me Dead’ as Barbara Carlin. She began her career with an emphasis on TV and theatre and only appeared in movies in the 1980s.


She performed in 1947 in the production ‘For Love or Money,’ which many critics applauded. She was also awarded a Tony award for her performance. Her second Broadway engagement was with Tom Ewell in 1951 in the biographical drama ‘Kin Hubbard.’

She made her TV debut as Amy March in a ‘The Ford Theater Hour’ episode in 1949. She was next featured in the Science Fiction Theater as Eve Patrick (1956). Her other television shows at that era include ‘The Alcoa Hour’ and ‘Studio 57.’ She also performed Faye Cameron’s role in the ‘Schlitz Playhouse of Stars’ anthology series.

The television shows Lux Video Theatre, Hollywood’s Studio One, United States Steel Hour, and Robert Montgomery Presents were among the several that Lockhart featured in between 1951 and 1959. He worked for the United States Steel Hour. Other single-episode performances include Connie in ‘Matinee Theatre’ (1958), ‘Zane Grey Theate’ in ‘Allie Cary’ (1958), and ‘Cimarron City’ in ‘Emily Newton’ (1958).

Her breakthrough was achieved when she was placed into the ‘Lassie’ CBS series as Ruth Martin in 1958, a part she had portrayed for seven years and featured in more than 200 episodes. She was also nominated for her part in the show for an Emmy.

She played Mariah Ramirez in the General Hospital during the 1970s and 1980s, Claudia Wentworth in ‘Ellery Queen’ and Mme Migley in ‘The Hardy Boys / Nancy Drew Mysteries.’ In 1982, Lockhart made her reappearance as Mrs. Helen Gillespie in films with ‘Butterfly.’ In 1986, she featured in ‘Troll’ as Eunice St. Clair, while her daughter Anne Lockhart played the younger version of her role.


Lockhart was also a voice actor who spoke in the animated series ‘This Are the Days’ for Martha Day, the principal character of Hanna-Barbera (1974-1975). In 1982, in the animated picture ‘Aladdin and the magic lamp,’ she became the mother of Aladdin.

She was also a great presenter in addition to performing, presenting for six years ‘Miss Universe Pageant’ and ‘Miss USA Pageant.’ Furthermore, she has hosted the ‘Roses Parade Tournament’ for 8 years and the ‘Thanksgiving Parade’ for 5 years.

Her most recent film and television performances have been in the biographical film ‘Wesley’ (2007) and the television movie ‘Holiday in Handcuffs’ (2007). She was granted two stars for her service to the world of cinema and television at the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In her career, Lockhart was twice nominated for Emmy awards – in 1953 and 1959. In 2013, she received NASA for motivating the general public about space and space exploration with the Exceptional Public Achievement Medal.
