A forward for Toronto FC and the United States national team, Josmer Volmy “Jozy” Altidore /ltidr/ (born November 6, 1989) is an American professional soccer player who plays for the club and for the United States national team.

Altidore made his professional debut with the New York Red Bulls in 2006, when he was sixteen years old. Transferring to Villarreal for a cost of $10 million in the middle of his third season with New York City FC occurred in 2008. Villarreal loaned him out on three occasions during his time there: to Spanish Segunda División club Xerez from February to May 2009, English Premier League club Hull City for the full 2009–10 season, and Turkish club Bursaspor, where he played for six months. In the summer of 2011, he took the decision to relocate to the Netherlands and join AZ. After scoring his 24th goal of the 2012–13 season on March 3, 2013, Altidore passed Clint Dempsey to set a new record for the most goals scored by an American in a European club season. The signing of Altidore by Sunderland occurred during the 2013 summer transfer window. He played there for one and a half seasons, scoring just one goal in that time, before returning to the MLS with Toronto.

At various levels of international competition, Altidore has represented the United States, appearing for the United States U-17 team at the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship, the United States U-20 team at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, the U-23 team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the senior national team at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, as well as the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.

Altidore was born in Livingston, New Jersey, to a Haitian-American family and raised in Boca Raton, Florida. He is the youngest of four children in the family. Since he was a child, he has enjoyed participating in soccer. At the age of 16, Altidore played for a number of South Florida youth clubs, including the Boca Raton Juniors Soccer Club, Schulz Academy, and Sunrise S.C. He also spent time practising with the United States under-17 national team at the IMG Academy in Bradenton. He was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness, as was his father.

Altidore was selected seventeenth overall in the 2006 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, with the MetroStars (now the New York Red Bulls) trading up to secure the pick. Altidore missed the most of the 2006 season as he pursued his high school certificate in Florida, where he spent the majority of the year.

Altidore made his professional debut on August 23, 2006, when he came on as a substitute in a 3–1 loss to D.C. United in the United States Open Cup. On September 16, 2006, he scored his first professional goal against the Columbus Crew with a 28-yard shot in the 83rd minute of a 1–0 victory.

Altidore scored another goal exactly one week later, on September 23, 2006, in a 4–3 loss to D.C. United on the road. Altidore quickly established himself as a fan favorite after scoring three goals in seven appearances, including a game-winning goal against the Chicago Fire on September 30, 2006.

He scored the lone goal for the Red Bulls in a 2–1 aggregate loss to D.C. United in the Eastern Conference Semifinals Series when he headed in a cross in the second leg of the series. With the goal, he became the youngest player in Major League Soccer history to score in the playoffs at the age of 16 years, 337 days, shattering DaMarcus Beasley’s previous record by nearly three years. Against D.C. United on October 21, Altidore made his first appearance in a Major League Soccer playoff game at the age of 19. (16 years, 349 days). On August 18, 2007, he also contributed two goals in a 5–4 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Altidore made his La Liga debut on September 14, 2008, when he came on as a second-half substitute against Deportivo La Corua in a 2-1 victory. On November 1, 2008, he became the first American international to score in La Liga when he came on as a substitute in the 90th minute against Athletic Bilbao and netted a goal against the club. Altidore made his La Liga debut against Recreativo Huelva on November 30, 2008, and went on to score a goal. Altidore returned to Villarreal after spending a year and a half on loan with the club. He preferred to remain with Villarreal rather than going on another loan in order to try to prove to the club that he was worth the investment they invested in him two years prior.

On January 30, 2009, Villarreal agreed to loan Altidore to Xerez, who was currently in first place in the Segunda División at the time of the transfer. The loan would last until the conclusion of the 2008–09 campaign. In addition to providing Altidore with additional playing time, the transfer was expected to help him to continue his integration into Spanish culture.

Altidore confirmed on his Twitter profile on August 5, 2009, that he would be loaned out to English Premier League team Hull City for the remainder of the season. A season-long loan with the option for Hull City to purchase his rights at the end of the 2009–10 season for a cost estimated at £6.5 million ($11 million) was agreed upon the next day, and he signed with the club the following day.

A work visa for Altidore was successfully obtained by Hull City on August 10, 2009, according to the city’s announcement. Altidore made his Hull City debut on August 22, 2009, when he came on as a second-half replacement in a 2-1 win over Bolton. He assisted Kamel Ghilas on his lone goal in a 1–0 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at KC Stadium on Saturday night. In a 3–1 win over Southend United in the second round of the League Cup on August 25, 2009, Altidore scored his first goal for Hull City and became the club’s leading scorer. He was well-liked by Tigers fans but struggled to make an impression on the team because of his poor finishing.

However, he did manage to score his first and only Premier League goal in a 2–1 win over Manchester City on February 6 at the Tigers’ home stadium. On April 24, during a crucial game for Hull City’s Premier League survival, he was ejected for violent behaviour following an altercation with Sunderland’s Alan Hutton, who was also removed. Hull City were defeated 1–0 and were on the verge of being relegated from the Premier League. Altidore made his first appearance for the club on August 7 as he came on as a second-half substitute against PSV Eindhoven.

Altidore scored in the 80th minute to aid his new team to a 3–1 victory on the opening day of the season. After being used as a substitute in the club’s previous Eredivisie game, Altidore was called upon once more as AZ lost 2–0 at FC Twente. Altidore made his debut appearance in the league for AZ on August 21 when they hosted NEC Nijmegen at the AFAS Stadion in Aachen. With the game deadlocked at 0-0 after the first half, Altidore scored the game’s opening goal in the 54th minute, pouncing on a rebound after NEC goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen saved his header. Twenty-nine minutes later, Altidore scored again, this time after some excellent passing with Adam Maher, and AZ ran out 4–0 winners.
