Joe Manchin, full name Joseph Manchin III (born August 24, 1947 in Farmington, West Virginia, United States), is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 2010 and took office later that year. He previously served as the state’s governor (2005–10).
Manchin was raised in the West Virginia town of Farmington, where his father operated a furniture company. He attended West Virginia University on a football scholarship until he was injured, but later earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration (1970). He married Gayle Conelly in 1967 and the pair later had three children. Manchin entered the business world following college, first working at his family’s store and later managing a carpet store before joining a coal brokerage.
Manchin first ran for office in 1982, when he was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates. After four years, he was elected to the state Senate (1986–96). Following a failed governorship bid in 1996, Manchin was elected secretary of state of West Virginia in 2000. He later stood for governor in 2004, and was elected at that time. He served from 2005 until 2010, when he won a special election to fill the vacancy left by the death of Senator Robert Byrd. Manchin was elected to the Senate later that year. Manchin rapidly established himself as one of the Senate’s most conservative Democrats—though he remained to the left of the majority of his Republican colleagues—and he frequently clashed with President Barack Obama’s administration on policy and legislative issues. He collaborated closely with numerous Republican colleagues in energy-producing states, including North Dakota’s Sen. John Hoeven, to develop an energy production programme that incorporated both renewable and nonrenewable energy sources, including—and particularly—coal, which is critical to West Virginia’s economy. Manchin was a stalwart supporter of gun rights and a staunch opponent of same-sex marriage and abortion.
Abortion, the act of removing a foetus from the uterus before it reaches viability (in human beings, usually about the 20th week of gestation). Abortion can occur naturally, in which case it is referred to as a miscarriage, or it can be induced intentionally, in which case it is frequently referred to as an induced abortion.
Miscarriages and spontaneous abortions occur for a variety of causes, including sickness, trauma, genetic abnormality, or metabolic incompatibility between mother and foetus. At times, a foetus will die in the uterus but will not be discharged, a condition known as a missed abortion.
Abortions conducted to protect the female’s health or in circumstances of rape or incest are considered therapeutic, or justifiable, abortions by some definitions. Abortion can be performed using a variety of medical procedures. During the first trimester (up to around 12 weeks following conception), the contents of the uterus may be removed using endometrial aspiration, suction, or curettage. Endometrial aspiration involves inserting a thin, flexible tube up the cervical canal (the womb’s neck) and sucking away the uterine lining (the endometrium) using an electric pump.
The related but slightly more arduous technique known as dilatation and evacuation (sometimes termed suction curettage or vacuum curettage) enlarges the cervical canal while the patient is sedated, followed by the insertion of a rigid suction tube into the uterus to empty its contents. When a thin metal tool called a curette is used to scrape out the contents of the uterus rather than suctioning them out, the technique is called dilatation and curettage. Both evacuation and curettage can be utilised in conjunction with dilatation up to roughly the 16th week of pregnancy.
Between 12 and 19 weeks, a saline solution injection may be used to produce uterine contractions; alternatively, prostaglandins may be used to induce contractions through injection, suppository, or other technique, however these chemicals may have significant adverse effects. During the second trimester or later, hysterotomy, the surgical removal of the uterine contents, may be employed. In general, the further along the pregnancy is, the greater the danger of death or significant problems for the female following an abortion.
In the late twentieth century, a novel way of inducing abortion was discovered. It involves the use of the chemical RU 486 (mifepristone), a synthetic steroid that is structurally similar to the contraceptive hormone norethnidrone. RU 486 inhibits the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for the development of a fertilised egg. When taken within weeks of conception, RU 486 induces menstruation and flushes the fertilised egg from the uterus.
