In NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision college football and the Big Ten Conference, the Indiana Hoosiers represent Indiana University Bloomington. Since 1960, Memorial Stadium has served as the home of the Indiana Hoosiers. The Big Ten Championship has been won twice by the squad, once in 1945 and once in 1967. Indiana has competed in 12 bowl games, including the Rose Bowl in 1968. Zora Clevinger, Bill Ingram, Pete Pihos, George Taliaferro, John Tavener, and Anthony Thompson, who was also named National Player of the Year in 1989, are among the six Indiana players inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Tom Allen leads the Indiana Hoosiers. The Indiana Hoosiers’ football team uses the John Mellencamp Pavilion as its main indoor athletics training facility. Following a $1.5 million donation from singer-songwriter John Mellencamp to help fund the project, it was dedicated on April 12, 1996. A regulation-size football pitch with a Sportexe Momentum 41 artificial surface was installed in 2007 in the indoor practise facility.

Memorial Stadium’s current incarnation, with a seating capacity of 52,656, was built in 1960 as part of a new athletics complex at the institution. It replaced the previous Memorial Stadium, a 20,000-seat stadium erected in 1925 on the site of the arboretum. Since its original construction, the stadium has been enlarged twice. North End Zone Student-Athlete Development Center, a $38 million, 138,000-square-foot facility, opened in 2009.

South End Zone Student-Athlete Excellence Center, a $53 million, 66,575-square-foot facility, debuted in 2018. Indiana football has the most all-time losses (686 as of the end of the 2020 season) in NCAA Division I (now FBS) history, as well as the eighth poorest all-time winning percentage (.423) among 128 FBS institutions. Purdue is rated 29th in all-time losses with 579, while fellow Big Ten programme Northwestern is ranked second with 677.

However, the Hoosiers have had recent success, making it to their first bowl game since 2007, the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, in 2015, the Foster Farms Bowl in 2016, the Gator Bowl in 2019, and the 2020 Outback Bowl, and concluding the 2019 regular season with an 8–4 record. The Hoosiers had a very good 2020 season, going 6–2 overall and 6–1 in the Big Ten Conference, and placing second in the Big Ten East division behind Ohio State. Coach Tom Allen was voted the Big Ten Coach of the Year for 2020 and was a finalist for the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award for the same year.

For the majority of the program’s existence, the Indiana football team has typically worn red jerseys (usually a variation of crimson red) with either red or white pants. Varied designs have also been included into the main jerseys and pants, with the Block-I logo or interlocking-IU logo,[111] striping, and different versions and positioning on the words ‘Indiana’ or ‘Hoosier.’ The Hoosiers wear white jerseys and white pants when they play on the road. Red-on-red colour schemes for the jersey and pants, as well as white jerseys with red pants, have all been notable exceptions.

While there are no specific alternate uniforms for the Indiana Hoosiers, there have been times when the uniforms have been changed from their conventional appearance. The jerseys and Block-I logo were changed to a red, black, and white colour scheme during the Cam Cameron era (1997–2001), with an original design for the traditional IU athletics logo incorporated; following Cameron’s departure, the design and colour combination were reverted to the interlocking-IU logo and official colours of Indiana.

The rear name-plate on the jerseys was removed for the 2018 season in order to keep the uniforms standardised and preserve Indiana’s tradition of “honouring “Team Over Self” by not displaying the players’ names on backs of jerseys in any sport,” but it was reinstated for the 2019 season. In the past, Indiana’s helmet design has been based on a red and white colour pattern.

These designs have included, but are not limited to, placing the Block-I logo on either side of the helmet (as well as on the front of the helmet – 1959-1961),an all red or all white helmet, the inclusion of the aforementioned redesigned IU logo from the Cam Cameron era (1997-2001),the use of the Indiana State Flag logo on one side of the helmet, and an alternating red and chrome-striped helmet. The various designs also include striping on the helmet.

The Hoosiers would conclude the regular season with an overall record of 8–4 (5–4 B1G) and would be bowl eligible by October 26; Indiana had not had an 8–4 overall season record since the 1993 season. The Hoosiers won the Old Oaken Bucket for the first time since 2016 on November 30, 2019, after defeating in-state foe Purdue 44–41 in two overtimes. Indiana was chosen to play Tennessee in the 2020 Gator Bowl on December 8, 2019, but the Hoosiers lost 22–23.

Both Allen and DeBoer received watchlist nominations for their respective Coach of the Year categories after the regular season ended, with DeBoer being named a semifinalist for the Broyles Award. Fresno State’s newest head coach, Kalen DeBoer, was hired on December 17, 2019, after only a year as the offensive coordinator for the Indiana Hoosiers.

Indiana promoted tight ends coach Nick Sheridan to offensive coordinator and running backs coach Mike Hart to associate head coach following DeBoer’s departure to Fresno State. Tom Allen took over as head coach on December 1, 2016.He was the defensive coordinator for Indiana earlier. The football team was invited to compete in the Foster Farms Bowl against the Utah Utes on December 28, 2016 at Levi’s Stadium.

Tom Allen’s head coaching debut came in the bowl game. Mike DeBord, the former offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Volunteers, was hired as the Hoosiers’ new offensive coordinator on January 4, 2017. The first episode of the season for ESPN’s College GameDay will be hosted in Bloomington on August 3, 2017. (and the first time it has been held in that city).

Allen’s first win as the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers came on September 9, 2017 at Charlottesville, as the Hoosiers defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 34–17. Following Hurricane Irma’s devastation in southern Florida, Indiana University Athletics and Florida International University mutually agreed to cancel their September 16 meeting.

Allen and the Hoosiers finished the 2017 season 5-7 overall and failed to qualify for a bowl game following their defeat at Purdue on November 25, 2017.Allen’s Hoosiers finished the 2018 season with a 5–7 overall record after failing to beat Purdue in a must-win game to become bowl eligible. If the Hoosiers lose to the Boilermakers, they will miss out on a bowl game for the second year in a row.

Kane Wommack was promoted from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator by the Indiana University Hoosiers on December 27, 2018. Mike DeBord, the offensive coordinator for the Indiana Hoosiers, retired from football on December 30, 2018. Kalen DeBoer, the former offensive coordinator at Fresno State, was named the new offensive coordinator for the Indiana Hoosiers on January 21, 2019.

Wilson’s Hoosiers would qualify for a bowl game for the first time since 2007, after finishing 6–6 overall (2–6 Big Ten). The Hoosiers finally fell to Duke 44–41 in overtime in the Pinstripe Bowl. Wilson hired Tom Allen, the former defensive coordinator of USF, to replace Knorr beginning the 2016 season on January 16, 2016, following the 2015 postseason.

The Hoosiers finished 6–6 overall (4–5 Big Ten) and bowl eligible for the second year in a row after the regular season ended in 2016. The Hoosiers haven’t been to back-to-back bowl games since 1990–1991 season. Wilson, on the other hand, resigned on December 1, 2016, citing “philosophical differences” with athletic director Fred Glass, as well as complaints of athlete mistreatment.

He eventually became the offensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes under Head Coach Urban Meyer. Indiana’s first game of the 2020 season was against the No. 8 Penn State Nittany Lions at Memorial Stadium on October 24, 2020. Indiana won 36–35 in overtime over Penn State. Following the win, the Indiana Hoosiers were given a No. 17 ranking.

Indiana won its next two games, defeating the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 37–21 and the No. 23 Michigan Wolverines 38–21, their first victory over them in 33 years.  The Hoosiers were placed tenth in the AP and coaches polls following their victory over the Wolverines, their highest positions since 1969 and 1992. The Hoosiers were invited to the Outback Bowl following the regular season, where they lost 26–20 to Ole Miss.

Kane Wommack, the defensive coordinator, left to become the head coach of the South Alabama Jaguars after the season. To replace him, the Indiana Pacers would bring in Georgia Bulldogs’ Charlton Warren. Indiana fired Offensive Coordinator Nick Sheridan on November 28 following a 2–10 overall (0–9 Big Ten) conclusion to the 2021 season. On December 9, the Hoosiers chose Walt Bell, a former UMass head coach, to replace Sheridan.
