American professional basketball club headquartered in Houston, Houston Rockets. The Houston Rockets have won two championships (1994 and 1995) as well as four Western Conference titles in their history. The San Diego Rockets franchise was established in 1967 and relocated to Houston after four losing seasons in 1971. The early teams of Rocket are headed by a pair of future Famers’ halls — Elvin Hayes who excelled at the University of Houston and Calvin Murphy — and Rudy Tomjanovich, who would thereafter train the Rockets for 12 seasons.
Houston traded in two matches in the 1976–77 season for the Elite Moses Malone Centre, which was the first time in club history that year and the Rockets proceeded to the conference finals. The Rockets exceeded this accomplishment in the 1980/81 season, when Houston accumulated three straight playoff series upsets on their way to a spot in the NBA Final, after completing a regular season with a stunning record of 40 wins and 42 losses. Malone departed the club in 1982, and in his absence, the Rockets slipped to the lowest tier of the NBA.
In 1984, Hakeem Olajuwon, another future Hall of Fame center (and another Houston university graduate), who soon became the face of the club, was drawn up by the Rockets. Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson (with a height of both 7 feet [2,13 meters]), another towering post-player, joined together to lead the Rockets to a further NBA finish in 1986 when they were again beaten by the Celtics. The Rockets continued to qualify for the postseason throughout the 1980s, but for the remainder of the decade, they did not progress to the 2nd playoff round.
Tomjanovich took over the head coaching responsibilities in the 1991–92 season, which led to the prosperity of the franchise era. In the 1993–94 and 1994–95 seasons, Houston won back-to-back NBA championships after an inspired performance by Olajuwon and important contributions by guard Sam Cassell and by forward Robert Horry and Clyde Drexler (1994–95).The club acquired Charles Barkley in 1996, but Houston was not sufficient to push the Western Conference final after 3 of the NBA’s 50 biggest players (Olajuwon, Drexler, and Barkley). The team was abandoned by every aging trio by 2001 and the early 21st Century Rockets, headed by Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming, China’s 7-foot-6 inches (2.29 m) superstar, continued the pattern of steady regular-season respectability and playoff failure.
In 2010 McGrady was moved; Yao retired after missing most of the last two seasons of wounds in 2011 and the Rockets started a path of reconstruction. During the reconstruction of the club, it was noteworthy because it relied on its player acquisitions on sophisticated statistical analysis (similar to know metrics in baseball). One consequence of the team’s unusual developmental strategy was that the Rockets won a playoff spot with the youngest squad in the NBA with the exceptional shooting guard James Harden in 2012–13. The club signed Dwight Howard Star Center in the next hour and the Rockets improved the previous season and moved on to the playoffs again.
In 2014–2015, Houston’s greatest record was (56–26) from the period of Olajuwon and the final of the Western Conference, when Houston fell to the Golden State Warriors. The squad slowly began the next season – which led to a coaching change in the early season – but the new coaching regime could not solve the problems in chemistry and effort that hit the rockets. Houston was the eighth seed in the 41–41 playoffs that year and was knocked off the playoffs in five games swiftly. This prompted another change in the off-season coaching and new headman Mike D’Antoni has placed Harden as point guard for his high efficiency and rapid offense. In the 2016-17 season, the Rockets established an NBA record with 1,181 3-Point shots on the road to a 55-win and a second-round playoff defeat.
The club acquired star guard Chris Paul in the off-season, helping to push the rockets to new levels in 2017-18 while setting a new franchise record for winning regular season (65). (1,256). Houston went to the Conference Finals, but Paul was injured at bad times in Game 5 of the series and opened the way to the Warriors for a 7-game series win. Even though the Rockets fought in early 2018–19, they were among the hottest playoff teams in the NBA. Despite this momentum, Houston was once again removed by the Warriors, this time in the semifinals of the conference.
