In the sport of American football, Georgia Tech’s football team is known as the Yellow Jackets. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Coastal Division and the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) (ACC). Georgia Tech has had a football team since 1892, and as of 2020, they have a 740–518–43 all-time record. The Yellow Jackets play at 55,000-seat Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field in Atlanta.

The Yellow Jackets have won four national championships and sixteen conference championships over the course of their long history as one of the most successful college football programmes in history (1917, 1928, 1952, 1990). John Heisman, after whom the Heisman Trophy is named, and Bobby Dodd, for whom the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award and the school’s stadium are after, are two of the team’s former coaches.

Heisman led the team to the most lopsided victory in football history, 222–0, and both Heisman and Dodd guided Tech to national titles. Dodd also led the Jackets to their longest victory streak — eight straight games — over the University of Georgia in what is known as the “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate” rivalry between the two schools. In the Georgia Tech–Clemson football rivalry, Heisman led Georgia Tech to an unblemished 12–0–1 record, which was made the more painful by the fact that Heisman had previously coached Clemson.

Tech has a long history of producing excellent collegiate and professional football players. Over 150 alumni have played in the NFL, including 48 first-team All-Americans. Maxie Baughan, Calvin Johnson, Demaryius Thomas, Keith Brooking, Joe Hamilton, Joe Guyon, Pat Swilling, and Billy Shaw are among the most celebrated and well-known athletes to have come out of the school.

Georgia Tech has won the Coastal Division four times in the twenty-first century and has played in the ACC Championship Game four times since 2006. In addition to conference and national titles, renowned coaches, and talented players, Tech’s football team has a long history of strange rituals and miraculous game ends. In addition, the Yellow Jackets competed in the South’s first integrated bowl game. Despite ESPN’s prediction that Georgia Tech would finish fifth in the Coastal Division, the Yellow Jackets finished the regular season with a 10–2 record (6-2 ACC), including wins over then-No. 19 Clemson and No. 9 Georgia, and were ranked No. 11 by the newly formed College Football Playoff Committee.

The season’s highlight was an overtime thriller at Athens, which featured Harrison Butker’s 53-yard field goal to force overtime, RB Zack Laskey’s 1-yard running touchdown, and CB D.J. White’s game-winning interception of UGA quarterback Hutson Mason’s pass. In Charlotte, North Carolina, Georgia Tech lost 37–35 to No. 4 Florida State in the 2014 ACC Championship Game. Because Florida State was selected in the top four (now No. 3), the Orange Bowl chose Georgia Tech (now No. 12) to face the No. 7 Mississippi State Bulldogs on December 31, 2014.  Justin Thomas led the Yellow Jackets to a 49–34 victory, putting them at 11–3, No. 8 in the Associated Press poll and No. 7 in the American Coaches Poll.

After multiple injuries throughout the season, the Yellow Jackets finished the 2015 season with a 3–9 record. On Homecoming Night, the Yellow Jackets upset No. 9 Florida State 22–16, when Lance Austin intercepted a field goal attempt by Florida State kicker Roberto Aguayo and returned it for the game-winning score. The “Miracle on Techwood Drive” was eventually named after it.

Georgia Tech did not make a bowl appearance in 2015 for the first time since 1996. The Yellow Jackets rebounded the following year, going 9–4 with a win over Kentucky in the TaxSlayer Bowl, spearheaded by team captain Justin Thomas. In 2016, Georgia was defeated 28–27 in Athens, with a 14-point fourth-quarter comeback capped by Qua Searcy’s 6-yard TD rush on third down with 30 seconds left. In 2017, the Yellow Jackets finished 5–6 (4–4 ACC), with close losses to Tennessee (42–41 in 2OT) at the Chick Fil A Kickoff Game in the newly constructed Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Miami (25–24).

Despite starting the 2018 season with a 3–3 record, the Yellow Jackets fought to end the regular season with a 7–5 record. The most notable victory was against Virginia Tech, which made Georgia Tech the only league opponent to win three consecutive games against Virginia Tech in Lane Stadium.  The Jackets were defeated 34–10 by the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the 2018 Quick Lane Bowl.

On November 28, 2018, Johnson announced his retirement, which will begin after the team’s bowl game. On December 7, 2018, Johnson’s successor, Geoff Collins, was announced. On December 7, 2018, Geoff Collins was named the new head coach, succeeding Paul Johnson, who announced his retirement after the 2018 season. Collins was hired on a seven-year, $23 million contract.

Geoff Collins formerly served as the head coach at Temple, as well as the defensive coordinator at Mississippi State and Florida, and as a graduate assistant and recruiting coordinator at Georgia Tech. The Jackets suffered a number of major losses during his rookie season. A 45–0 loss to Virginia Tech was the Jackets’ first shutout loss at Bobby Dodd Stadium since 1957, and a loss to The Citadel was their first loss against an FCS opponent since 1983. Brisbane Park, Ponce de Leon Park, and Piedmont Park served as the team’s home field from 1893 to 1912.

Despite the fact that the terrain was unleveled and rocky, Georgia Tech took out a seven-year lease on what is now the southern end of Grant Field. Heisman had 300 convict labourers clear rocks, remove tree stumps, and level the field for play in 1905, and later Tech students built a grandstand on the property. By 1913, the site had been purchased, and John W. Grant had donated $15,000 to help build the field’s first permanent stands, which were named Grant Field in honour of the donor’s son, Hugh Inman Grant, who had died.

The stadium, which is one of the oldest Division I FBS football stadiums, presently lies among a unique metropolitan cityscape. Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Stadium are the only Division I stadiums older than this. Until 1971, Grant Field was a grassy field. In 1995, grass took the place of astroturf.  The stadium holds 55,000 people, however it has housed up to 56,412 people in 2005and 56,680 people in 2006.

Georgia Tech authorities announced intentions on February 26, 2019, to hold one home game per season (five total) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which is less than a mile from the Georgia Tech main campus, from 2020 to 2024. The series will be branded “Mayhem at MBS.” Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Notre Dame game was shifted back to Bobby Dodd Stadium on July 30, 2020, and the arrangement with MBS was extended to six years, extending through 2026, with six games. Bobby Dodd requested the interlocking GT logo, which was designed in 1967. A logo for the helmets was requested by one of the varsity players.

A yellow jacket design was one of several designs submitted. The yellow jacket was not submitted since it would have to sting and consequently fly backwards to make the insect look realistic. During the summer of 1967, the interlocking GT was chosen and transformed into helmet decals. Georgia Tech Athletics adopted the emblem as their official logo throughout time.

In 2008, the Yellow Jackets changed their uniform style after hiring head coach Paul Johnson. The yellow uniforms were replaced with gold uniforms a year later. The uniforms were changed once again a year later. This time, the Yellow Jackets switched to separate white outfits for home and away games, but keeping the previous styles’ navy and gold shirts for when they couldn’t wear white at home.

Georgia Tech made the transition to Adidas in 2018 after nearly 40 years with Russell Athletic. More unified branding across all sports, as well as a special gold colour for the team and new uniforms that combine innovative and classic aspects, came with the overhaul. The Georgia Bulldogs have faced the Auburn Tigers in football more than 90 times, making their rivalry the second-oldest in the Southeast. Auburn University, sometimes known as A.P.I., is Georgia Tech’s most frequent football opponent. Basketball, baseball, and other sports have a fierce rivalry.

On November 25, 1892, in Atlanta, Georgia, the first game was played. Before joining the Southeastern Conference, they competed in the SIAA until it was extinct in 1922. When Georgia Tech Athletics left the Southeastern Conference in 1963 to become an independent institution, this rivalry lost some of its charm. The Yellow Jackets did, however, continue to play the Auburn Tigers in their annual football series until 1987. In addition to football games, Georgia Tech and Auburn compete in other sports on a regular basis. The Auburn Tigers are Georgia Tech’s second-highest sports rivalry, behind only the Georgia Bulldogs, despite the Yellow Jackets’ recent admission to the Atlantic Coast Conference for all sports. With the last game played in 2005, Auburn leads the series 47–41–4 all-time.
