Gary Charles Peters Sr. (born December 1, 1958) is an American lawyer and politician who has represented Michigan in the United States Senate since 2015. From 2013 to 2015, he served as the United States Representative representing Michigan’s 14th congressional district, which encompasses the eastern part of Detroit, the Grosse Pointes, Hamtramck, Southfield, and Pontiac. From 2009 to 2013, he was the representative for Michigan’s 9th congressional district.
Prior to his election to Congress, Peters served in the US Navy Reserve, worked as an investment counsellor for 22 years, and briefly worked in academia. In 1991, he was elected to the Rochester Hills City Council, representing the 14th district.
At the age of 34, Peters enlisted in the United States Navy Reserve. He served in forces at Selfridge Air National Guard Base for almost 10 years, including Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 26. Peters obtained the Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist title and worked as an assistant supply officer throughout his Navy service. Peters’ reserve service includes time in the Persian Gulf supporting Operation Southern Watch, and he returned to the Middle East after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Before leaving the Reserve in 2008, Peters rose through the ranks to Lieutenant Commander, earning the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
He graduated from the College of Naval Command and Staff with a certificate in 2018. Peters worked as a financial advisor for 22 years, beginning as an associate vice president at Merrill Lynch in 1980 and ending as a vice president at Paine Webber in 1989. Peters was the third Griffin Endowed Chair in American Government at Central Michigan University from 2007 to 2008. He taught one class every semester in that part-time role, as well as planning other student events, such as two polo matches.
Two months after being hired, Peters declared his campaign for Congress. Some students and faculty members objected to Peters’ employment, claiming that he would be unable to remain neutral in the classroom while campaigning for government, and that his university employment was essentially funding his campaign. Peters has also taught finance at Wayne State University and Oakland University’s strategic management and business policy courses.
Peters worked for the Michigan Department of Treasury as a senior policy and financial analyst and served on arbitration panels for the New York Stock Exchange and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. The 14th Senate district is one of Michigan’s most diversified, with virtually every racial, ethnic, and religious group represented. It encompasses the cities of Pontiac, Bloomfield Hills, Southfield, and Oak Park in southern Oakland County. Peters was elected by his Democratic colleagues to lead the caucus of his party. He also served on the Michigan Sentencing Commission and the Michigan Law Revision Commission. A measure supported by Peters was enacted by the Michigan State House of Representatives and Senate, prohibiting any new wells from being drilled in state waters of the Great Lakes unless there is a state energy emergency. Without the signature, the bill became law.
Peters competed for the Senate seat held by retiring Senator Carl Levin in 2014. Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow backed Peters, and his candidacy effectively eliminated any prospective Democratic challenges. The Senate Majority PAC, Peters’ top independent backer, spent over $3.2 million on commercials targeting Peters’ opponent in the campaign. Senator Elizabeth Warren endorsed Peters during a campaign fundraiser in July 2014. While the race was tight at first, errors by his Republican Party opponent Terri Lynn Land’s campaign, as well as her unwillingness to appear in public, aided Peters’ campaign; he maintained regular leads in polls. In the general election in November 2020, Peters will face Republican nominee John E. James. James previously sought for Senate against colleague Senator Debbie Stabenow, but lost.
He became the first sitting US senator to openly share a personal family experience with abortion less than a month before the election. Peters was re-elected for a second term, although by a smaller margin (1.7 percent) than predicted. On January 6, 2021, Peters was helping to certify the results of the United States Electoral College vote tally for the year 2021 when Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol. When protesters broke into the Capitol, Peters and other senators and staff were removed from the Senate floor. He went into hiding and tweeted that the attacks were “dangerous, unacceptable, and an attack on our democracy — and must stop.” Peters criticised Trump, calling him a “clear and present danger” who should be removed from office immediately via the United States Constitution’s Twenty-fifth Amendment or impeachment.
