Elizabeth Ann Warren (née Herring; born June 22, 1949) is the senior United States senator representing Massachusetts, where she has served since 2013. Warren, a member of the Democratic Party and a progressive, has spent her time in the Senate focusing on consumer protection, economic opportunity, and the social safety net.
Warren ran for President of the United States in the 2020 Democratic Party primaries and came in third place. Warren attended the University of Houston and Rutgers Law School, and has taught law at the University of Houston, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard University.
Before entering politics, she was one of the most important bankruptcy law teachers in the country. Warren is the author of 12 books and over 100 articles. Her first venture into public policy was in 1995, when she campaigned to defeat what would later become a 2005 law restricting individual bankruptcy access. During her aggressive public positions in support of more stricter banking rules following the financial crisis of 2007–08, Warren’s national reputation increased in the late 2000s. She was the first head of the Congressional Oversight Panel of the Troubled Asset Relief Program, and she created and formed the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Warren taught children with disabilities in a public school for a year in 1970, after earning a degree in speech pathology and audiology but before enrolling in law school. She worked as a summer associate at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft while law school. Warren began offering legal services from her home after earning her J.D. and passing the bar exam. She wrote wills and handled real estate closings. Warren taught law at numerous American institutions in the late 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s while investigating bankruptcy and middle-class personal financial concerns.
In the mid-1990s, she became active with public work in bankruptcy regulation and consumer protection. Warren announced her intention to compete for the Democratic nomination in the 2012 U.S. Senate race in Massachusetts on September 14, 2011. After Ted Kennedy’s death in 2010, Republican Scott Brown won the seat in a special election. A video of Warren speaking in Andover became popular on the Internet a week later. Warren answers to the allegation that raising taxes on the wealthy is “class warfare” by claiming that no one became wealthy in the United States without relying on infrastructure built by the rest of society.
Warren announced her candidacy for a second term as a United States senator from Massachusetts in an email to supporters on January 6, 2017, writing, “The people of Massachusetts didn’t send me to Washington to roll over and play dead while Donald Trump and his team of billionaires, bigots, and Wall Street bankers crush the working people of our Commonwealth and this country….” Warren beat Republican nominee Geoff Diehl 60 percent to 36 percent in the 2018 election.
Warren beat Brown with 53.7 percent of the vote on November 6, 2012. Following the November 2012 elections, she became the first woman ever elected to the United States Senate from Massachusetts, as part of a U.S. Senate that had 20 women senators in office, the highest number of women in the Senate in history at the time. Warren was appointed to the Senate Banking Committee in December 2012, which monitors the implementation of Dodd–Frank and other banking sector regulations.
Warren was sworn in by Vice President Joe Biden on January 3, 2013. “I’m extremely worried that ‘too big to fail’ has become ‘too large for trial,'” Warren said at her first Banking Committee hearing in February 2013, when she challenged various banking regulators to identify when they had last put a Wall Street bank to trial. In only a few days, videos of Warren being questioned had surpassed one million views. Warren asked Treasury Department officials why criminal charges were not filed against HSBC for its money laundering operations during a Banking Committee hearing in March. “If you’re caught with an ounce of cocaine, the odds are strong you’re going to jail,” Warren said, comparing money laundering to drug possession.
Warren was designated a contender for Secretary of the Treasury in the Biden Administration in November 2020. When Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, Warren was there to participate in the 2021 United States Electoral College vote count. She described it as a “attempted coup and act of insurgency egged on by a corrupt president to topple our democracy,” with the culprits referred to as “domestic terrorists.” The day following the assault, Warren joined the rest of Massachusetts’ congressional delegation in calling for Trump’s impeachment or invocation of the United States Constitution’s Twenty-fifth Amendment to be invoked.
