Deborah Ann Stabenow (born April 29, 1950) is an American politician who currently serves as the senior United States Senator for the state of Michigan, a position she has held since 2000. She is a Democrat who defeated Republican incumbent Spencer Abraham to become the state’s first female U.S. senator. She represented Michigan’s 8th congressional district in the US House of Representatives from 1997 to 2001 before being elected to the Senate. She formerly served on the Board of Commissioners of Ingham County and in the Michigan State Legislature.
In 2000, Stabenow chose to oppose incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Spencer Abraham rather than seek reelection to the House. She ran uncontested in the Democratic primary. Stabenow beat Abraham 49.5 percent to 48 percent in the general election (a difference of 67,259 votes). Republican Michael Bouchard, the Oakland County Sheriff and former State Senate Majority Floor Leader, ran against Stabenow. Stabenow won by a margin of 57 percent to 41 percent. In the Democratic primary, Stabenow ran unchallenged and beat Republican opponent Pete Hoekstra, a former U.S. Congressman, 59 percent to 38 percent. Stabenow was re-elected for a fourth term, beating Republican challenger John E. James by a margin of 52.3 percent to 45.8%. The margin of victory was 275,660 votes (6.50%). Stabenow formerly served on the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee and the Special Committee on Aging, in addition to her current committee duties. Only Thomas W. Ferry and Stabenow are the only people from Michigan to have served in both chambers of the Michigan State Legislature and both chambers of the United States Congress. She is also the first state lawmaker from Michigan to be elected to the United States Senate by the people (until enactment of the Seventeenth amendment to the United States Constitution in 1913, U.S. Senators were selected by the state legislature) When she was chosen secretary of the Democratic caucus on November 16, 2004, Stabenow became the third-ranking Democratic Party member in the United States Senate. She aided Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid in defining the Democratic agenda and goals as caucus secretary. Senator Dick Durbin, the second-ranking Democrat, was chosen minority whip. Reid stated in November 2006 that Stabenow will leave her post as caucus secretary to take over as head of the Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee, tasked with “Democratic Senators and community leaders around the country in an active discussion.”
