Chicago Bulls, a Chicago-based professional basketball club playing in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Chicago Bulls are unquestionably linked to former shooting guard Michael Jordan, who captained the team to six NBA championships (1991-93, 1996-98) and is often regarded as the best basketball player in history by many observers. The club was founded in 1966 and started promisingly, with NBA’s expansion team record 33 wins and 48 defeats.

The Bulls, led by excellent players including Bob Love, Chet Walker, Jerry Sloan, and Norm Van Lier, qualified for the playoffs every year from 1969–70 through 1974–75, but only advanced to the second round on two separate occasions. Following the departure of the illustrious foursome, the Bulls sank into mediocrity and had a string of disappointing seasons, mostly in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 1984, Chicago designed Jordan with the third overall NBA draught pick, and the club started its rise to domination.

In the 1984–85 season, Jordan earned the NBA’s Rookie of the Year Award and led Chicago to the first of 14 in a row playing posts. However, his great performance did not immediately result in his team’s success in post-season action, as the Bulls lost in each of Jordan’s first three years in the first round of playoffs. In 1987 Chicago acquired Scottie Pippen, who completed Jordan’s talents perfectly and boosted the young team’s overall quality significantly. The Bulls moved to the East Conference Finals only in 1989 to be eliminated for the second consecutive year by the Detroit Pistons from the playoffs, while Doug Collins was replaced by Phil Jackson after the season.

Jackson and Tex Winter assistant trainer set up “the triangle system,” an offensive strategy based on precise player and ball-free movement spacing that deterred defensive opponents from Jordan’s duplicate teams. With the new system in place, Jordan, Pippen, and several important players — including Horace Grant, Bill Cartwright’s experience center, and John Paxson as a three-point shooting specialist – put Pistons in for a seventh game before they lost in the Eastern Conference Finals in 1990.

Finally, the Bulls beat their relentless opponents in the next year, sweeping Detroit into four games to gain an entrance in the 1991 NBA Finals, when the Bulls won the Los Angeles Lakers’ first championship. Before the 1993–94 season, Jordan retired by claiming a failing interest in basketball and a desire to pursue a professional baseball career, and the Bulls, in their absence, regressed and lost in the second round of the 1994 play-offs. In 1995 off seasón, the club acquired flamboyantly controversial star rebounder Dennis Rodman and the reenergized Bulls toured the league the following year with a record of 72 victories and just 10 defeats (which the Golden State Warriors shattered in 2015–16).

In the 1996 NBA Finals, the Bulls closed their run by defeating the Seattle Supersonics. In 1997 and 1998 Chicago returned to the final, and the Bulls beat Utah Jazz to win the NBA championship on all occasions. After leading the club in eight years to 6 championships, Jackson, who has not been pleased with the team’s administration, particularly General Manager Jerry Krause, who some had been honored for the success of the Bulls, chose after the 1997-98 season to depart Chicago. His departure led to the second retirement of Jordan, the desire of Pippen to be moved to a different club, and Rodman’s choice to join the Lakers.

A long process of reconstruction led Chicago to return to the playoffs three times in a row, starting with the 2004-05 season. Rose missed the next whole season, and in 2013-2014 he was knocked by a different injury out of just 10 games, but the tenacious Bulls managed to qualify without their superstar for playoffs in both the seasons. In the 2014/15 season, Rose played in over one-third of the team’s games and the bulls reached the playoffs losing again in the second round. The club made a coaching change in the next off-season to stop Bull’s decreasing court return, but in 2015–16 Chicago finished with a record of 42–40 and completed their 7-season qualification series for the playoffs.

In the next off-season, the Rose squad left in a free agency and added the Dwyane Wade home to play with Jimmy Butler. The combination brought the bulls back to the 2016-17 playoffs, which culminated in a defeat of the first round. The club split ways with Wade and Butler in the next season to win the Bulls 14 fewer matches in 2017-18 and to start a reconstruction effort.
