Benjamin Eric Sasse (born February 22, 1972) is an American politician who has served as Nebraska’s junior senator since 2015. He is a Republican Party supporter. Sasse, who was born in Plainview, Nebraska, graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor’s degree in government, a master’s degree in liberal studies from St. John’s College, and master’s and doctorate degrees in American history from Yale University. He taught at the University of Texas and worked for the US Department of Health and Human Services as an assistant secretary. Sasse became the 15th president of Midland University in Fremont, Nebraska, in 2010. He competed for a vacancy in the United States Senate in 2014 and defeated Democratic opponent David Domina 65 percent to 31 percent. Sasse was re-elected to a second term in 2020. Sasse was one of seven Republican senators who voted to convict Donald Trump of incitement to insurgency in his second impeachment hearing on February 13, 2021.
Sasse worked as an associate consultant at the management consulting company Boston Consulting Group from September 1994 until November 1995. He worked as a consultant/executive director for Christians United For Reformation for the following year (CURE). CURE amalgamated with the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals (ACE) during Sasse’s term, and he became the executive director of ACE in Anaheim, California. Sasse worked as the head of staff for the US Department of Justice Office of Legal Policy in Washington, D.C. from January 2004 to January 2005, as well as a part-time assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin, travelling to Austin to lecture. From July to September 2005, Sasse worked as a consultant for the United States Department of Homeland Security in Washington, D.C., on national security problems.
From September 2005 until December 2006, he relocated to Austin, Texas, to continue his full-time professorship. Sasse worked as a counsellor to the secretary at the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in Washington, D.C. from December 2006 to December 2007, advising the secretary on a wide range of health policy problems, from healthcare access to food safety and security. Sasse was appointed assistant secretary for planning and evaluation in the US Department of Health and Human Services by President George W. Bush in July 2007.
The Osborn campaign cited a 2009 Bloomberg Businessweek column titled “Health-Care Reform: The Rush to Pass a Bad Bill,” in which Sasse stated that “there’s an emerging consensus that this [an individual mandate] might be a good idea,” and a 2010 speech in which Sasse stated that Republicans would likely lack the votes to repeal the ACA, stating that “a middle-class entitlement has never been reformed.” To a World-Herald remark, Sasse responded that in his writings and speeches, he was explaining the political scene rather than offering his personal thoughts on the ACA’s merits.
Sasse beat Democrats Chris Janicek, who had won the Democratic primary, and Preston Love Jr., who had the backing of the state Democratic party, in the 2020 election. 62.7 percent of the vote went to Sasse. In February 2019, Sasse was one of 16 senators who voted against legislation that would have prevented a partial government shutdown and funded $1.375 billion for border barriers, including 55 miles of fence, along the US–Mexico border. Sasse was one of 12 senators that co-sponsored a motion in March 2019 calling for a constitutional amendment to restrict the Supreme Court to nine justices. After many Democratic presidential contenders indicated interest in expanding the number of Supreme Court seats, the motion was introduced.
When Donald Trump supporters stormed the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, Sasse was participating in the certification of the 2021 United States Electoral College vote tally. As a result, he blamed Trump. He said Trump “delighted” in the Capitol attack and was a “broken guy.” Sasse stated that if articles of impeachment were brought to him in the Senate, he would examine them, claiming that Trump had “disregarded his oath of office.” On February 13, 2021, Sasse joined six other Republican Senators in voting to convict Trump.
