Rebecca Elizabeth Sauerbrunn (born June 6, 1985) is an American professional soccer player who currently plays for the Portland Thorns of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), the top level of women’s professional soccer in the United States. Sauerbrunn has been the captain of the US women’s national soccer team since 2021. She previously captained Utah Royals FC and, with Carli Lloyd, co-captained the national team from 2016 to 2018.

From 2003 until 2007, Sauerbrunn was a member of the Virginia Cavaliers’ soccer team. She has previously represented the Utah Royals FC, FC Kansas City, Washington Freedom, Ra IL, magicJack, and D.C. United in professional soccer. She won two NWSL Championships with FC Kansas City.Sauerbrunn was a member of the national squad that won gold at the 2012 London Summer Olympics, the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, as well as the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where the United States came second. She played in the semifinal match of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, a 3–1 victory over France.


She was a starter for the United States in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, appearing in every minute of the team’s seven games. Becky Sauerbrunn was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to Jane and Scott Sauerbrunn. She has two elder brothers, Grant and Adam. Her brothers inspired her to stand up for herself and become physically and emotionally tough as she grew up. Sauerbrunn started playing soccer with the JB Marine Soccer Club when he was 12 years old.

 

She was a key member of the team that helped it win the Missouri State Cup four times and the Midwest Regional Championship in 2000.Sauerbrunn was a four-year letterwinner in soccer, volleyball, and basketball at Ladue High School. She was named captain of the soccer squad while playing sweeper and centre midfield. She had a senior season in which she scored 21 goals and added 19 assists.

She was named Missouri’s Gatorade Player of the Year in 2003, a Parade All-American in 2002 and 2003, a 2001 NSCAA Youth All-American, and an NSCAA Adidas (U-17) All-American in 2002. Sauerbrunn started all 21 of her appearances for the Cavaliers during the 2006 season. Sauerbrunn assisted Virginia to the third round of the 2006 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament, where they fell to Texas A&M on November 17. Sauerbrunn garnered NSCAA All-Region, All-ACC First Team, and NSCAA All-American Second Team honours following the 2006 season. She was also chosen to the All-Academic Team of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Sauerbrunn started all 23 of her appearances for the Cavaliers during the 2007 season. She had one goal and three assists in 2,232 minutes of action.  Sauerbrunn assisted Virginia to the third round of the 2007 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament, where they lost in overtime to UCLA on November 23. Sauerbrunn was named to the NSCAA All-Region team, the NSCAA All-American First Team, and the All-ACC First Team after the 2007 season. She was named to the Academic All-American squad, the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Tournament Team, and the ACC All-Academic Team.


She received the NSCAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the ACC Player of the Year awards. She was picked to the final 23-player roster for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in May 2019. Sauerbrunn played in six of the USWNT’s seven matches throughout the tournament, missing just the first encounter against Thailand. The US women’s national team went on to win back-to-back World Cup titles and their fourth overall World Cup victory by defeating the Netherlands 2–0 in the final. In 2007, Sauerbrunn accompanied the U-21 national team to Germany for three matches against Gutersloh, SG Essen-Schönebeck, and 07 Bad Neuenahr.

In early June, she trained with the squad in Portland, Oregon, in preparation for the 2007 Nordic Cup. Sauerbrunn was named to the 18-player roster for the 2007 Nordic Cup in Vassa, Finland, following the training camp. [103] Sauerbrunn entered the game in the 89th minute of the team’s 1–0 victory over Norway in the tournament’s opening encounter.  She also made an appearance in the last minutes of the contest on July 22 to assist the US upset Sweden and advance to the title game.  The United States took against Germany in the championship game. In the 79th minute, Sauerbrunn came on for Ali Krieger to assist the US win the match and the Nordic Cup.

After the Nordic Cup was transformed to a U-23 competition in 2008, the U-21 squad became the U-23 team. Sauerbrunn joined the now-U-23 national squad in the La Manga Tournament in Spain after a brief stint with the full national team in early 2008. After a 1–1 draw with Germany in their final match, the US finished second in the tournament.  After that, Sauerbrunn joined the team in England for two matches against the England U-23 national team.  The opening match was held on March 12th, with Sauerbrunn taking the field. The US defeated England 1–0. [110] On March 14, Sauerbrunn began the second match, which the United States won 2–0.

From June 5 to 12, Sauerbrunn practised with the U-23 national team at The Home Depot Center in preparation for the 2008 Nordic Cup.Sauerbrunn was later named to the lineup for the 2008 Nordic Cup, which took place in late July.  On July 21, the United States defeated Germany to win the Nordic Cup championship. Sauerbrunn was part of a 23-man training camp in preparation for two matches against Colombia in early April. She played in both games but did not complete the full 90 minutes in either.  In early June, Sauerbrunn was named to the lineup for a second two-game series against Japan, and she started both games.

Sauerbrunn was picked to the 18-player roster to represent the United States at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on July 12, 2016. On August 3, she made her Rio debut in the team’s first match against New Zealand. Her first Olympic start earned her the title of Woman of the Match.  She also played in the second group match against France, assisting the US to a victory and a first-place finish in the group. On August 9, Sauerbrunn played the entire 90 minutes of his team’s last group encounter against Colombia, which concluded in a 2–2 tie.  Sauerbrunn began the match against Sweden in the quarterfinals on August 12. Both regulation and extra time ended with a 1–1 tie. Sweden then defeated the United States on penalty kicks.
