Baylor University’s football team competes in Division I FBS collegiate football. The Big 12 Conference is their home. After 64 years at off-campus Baylor Stadium, which was renamed Floyd Casey Stadium in 1989, the Bears moved to McLane Stadium on campus for the 2014 season. Following a ban against football violence in 1906, no team was fielded; 1906 is one of three seasons since 1899 in which Baylor has not competed in varsity football, the others being 1943 and 1944 (during World War II).

In 1907, Luther Burleson led the reconstituted football team to a 4–3–1 record. For the 1908 and 1909 seasons, E.J. Mills was the team’s coach; their 3–5–0 and 5–3–0 records were memorable for the team’s 1908 loss to LSU and the world’s first “Homecoming” at the 1909 Thanksgiving Day game, which featured a concert, parade, and bonfire. Baylor still holds the record for hosting the world’s largest homecoming procession. The Battle of the Brazos (until 2011 when Texas A&M departed the Big 12), membership in the historic Southwest Conference, a live bear mascot since 1915, and the Baylor Line are just a few of Baylor’s traditions.

When John Hill Westbrook of Elgin, Texas joined the Baylor squad in 1966, he became the first African American to play varsity football in the Southwest Conference.Baylor won the SWC Championship four times: in 1915, 1916, 1922, and 1924. In 1956, Baylor came close to winning the SWC again, but finished second and was assigned to the 1957 Sugar Bowl to face the unbeaten No. 2 Tennessee Volunteers. Johnny Majors and the No. 2 Volunteers were upset by Baylor 13–7. Until defeating No. 1 Kansas State in 2012, this was Baylor’s highest-ranked opponent.

The SWC Championship in 1924 would be the last for several decades, until Baylor won it again in 1974 under third-year head coach Grant Teaff. Baylor also competed in the 1952 Orange Bowl (vs. Georgia Tech), twice in the Gator Bowl (vs. Auburn and Florida), and the Bluebonnet (beating LSU), Dixie (beating Wake Forest), and Gotham Bowls from the late 1940s to the mid 1960s (beating No. 10 ranked Utah St in New York City). Baylor had finished last in four of the previous seven seasons, including the previous year, and had not won the Big 12 title in 50 years. They have also never played in the Cotton Bowl before to this season. Furthermore, Baylor had lost 16 consecutive games versus the Texas Longhorns prior to the 1974 season.

The 1974 Texas vs. Baylor game appeared to be another easy win for Texas, as the Longhorns quickly took control of the game and led 24–7 at halftime. Baylor, on the other hand, came out firing in the second half, ignited by a blocked punt early in the third quarter. The Bears beat the Longhorns 34–24 in a thrilling game. Baylor went on to win the Big 12 title and make their first trip to the Cotton Bowl that year (the first time in seven seasons that Texas did not win the Southwest Conference title). Many sports writers called the 1974 Baylor football season the “Miracle on the Brazos.” As a result, the victory over Texas and the SWC championship have become memorable moments in Baylor’s athletic history.

Grant Teaff was one of Baylor football’s most successful coaches. In 1974, his third year in the programme, he led the Bears to conference crowns, and in 1980, he guided the Bears to the Cotton Bowl to face the Alabama Crimson Tide. Mike Singletary, Thomas Everett, Walter Abercrombie, and James Francis were all recruited by Grant Teaff to play football at Baylor University. After the 1974 season, Teaff was also voted National Coach of the Year. In his 21 years as head coach, he led Baylor to eight bowl games and two Southwest Conference championships (1974, 1980). Matt Rhule, a former Temple coach, was hired as the head football coach at Baylor in December 2016 and was handed a seven-year contract. Rhule then replaced all of the previous football coaches and support staff, and the hiring process was finished in February 2017.

Coach Rhule and the Bears had a dismal debut season in 2017, going 1-11. The lone win came in week 10 against the Kansas Jayhawks, who they defeated 38-9 on the road. A close loss to No. 3 Oklahoma (49-41) and a two-point loss to No. 23 West Virginia rounded out the rest of the season (38-36). After a stunning Texas Bowl victory against Vanderbilt, Coach Rhule led the Baylor Bears to one of the nation’s largest one-year turnaround seasons, going from 1 win to 7 wins (45-38). Baylor concluded the year with a 7-6 record, but it was on the verge of having a very excellent season, since four of their losses came against top-20 competition (No. 6, No. 9, No. 13, No. 20). The 2019 season will go down in Baylor football history as one of the best.

With an 11-1 record in the regular season, the Bears tied for first place in the Big 12 and set a new programme record for wins. In the Big 12 Championship game, the Bears were defeated by Oklahoma in a close, hard-fought contest. Baylor finished the season rated No. 7 in the CFP poll and was picked to play in the Sugar Bowl against the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs. They were defeated by a score of 14-26. Rhule was hired as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers of the NFL on January 7, 2020, after significantly transforming Baylor’s football programme and national profile. Following Rhule’s departure to the Panthers in January 2020, Baylor signed former LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda.  Aranda had a 2–7 record in its debut season, including wins over Kansas (0–9) and Kansas State (4–6).

Baylor beat Oklahoma State 21-16 in the Big 12 Championship Game on December 4, 2021. Coach Dave Aranda accepted responsibility for the team’s contentious choice to go for the first down on a 4th-and-1 at their own 36-yard line. The Oklahoma State rally was sparked by a failed convert. Coach Aranda, on the other hand, admitted to the call in a post-game interview, noting that Baylor Football is all about taking opportunities when they arise, a mindset that eventually helped them win the game. With 1:19 remaining, Oklahoma State had possession of the ball at the Baylor 2-yard line. Baylor made one of the all-time great goal-line stops, stopping them on three runs and a pass.

From 1950 to 2013, the Baylor Bears played their home games at Floyd Casey Stadium, formerly known as Baylor Stadium. After WWII, in 1948, work on what would become Floyd Casey Stadium began. The stadium was built for $1.8 million on property provided by a Baylor landowner. Baylor Stadium opened in 1950 with a game versus Houston, which Baylor won 34–7. When completed, the new stadium was Texas’ second largest football stadium. [needs citation] Floyd Casey Stadium has a 50,000-seat capacity and had undergone various restorations over the years, the most recent in 2009.

The Bears previously played at Municipal Stadium (1936–1949), Cotton Palace (1926–1929), and Carroll Field on campus (1906–1925 and 1930–1935). Carroll Field has been the Bears’ only on-campus home field since the 2012 season.Baylor University broke ground on a new $266 million stadium on the north bank of the Brazos River in the fall of 2012. The stadium debuted for the 2014 football season on August 31, 2014, with the opening game against old Southwest Conference opponent Southern Methodist University (SMU).

Drayton McLane, Jr., a major donor to the stadium’s development, was honoured with the name McLane Stadium. McLane Stadium is Waco’s and Central Texas’ largest building project, and it has boosted revenue in the downtown area. Although McLane Stadium has a smaller capacity than Floyd Casey Stadium, it may be expanded to 55,000 seats. The Simpson Center, which opened in 2009, is a 97,000-square-foot building for football operations. The 13,500-square-foot football weight room is also housed in this structure. The structure is over three floors tall and is built in a typical collegiate architecture that matches the red brick southern architectural style of the Baylor University campus.

The major athletic training room, football team locker room, equipment room, coach’s locker room, and a huge primary weight room are all located there. Academic support rooms are also available at the Simpson Center for studying and academic work. The Simpson Center now has state-of-the-art underwater treadmills for sports and athletic rehabilitation. Freshmen are exposed to the Baylor Line as one of the first components of Baylor spirit. The ‘Baylor Line,’ which is made up entirely of freshmen, represents Baylor’s enthusiasm and tradition. On the back of the gold football jersey, students write their predicted graduation year and a nickname.

The Baylor Line gathers at one end of McLane Stadium before each football game and waits for the signal to make a’mad dash’ down the field, creating a gigantic people tunnel through which the football team sprints to enter the stadium. The Baylor Line has six members who carry flags with the letters B-A-Y-L-O-R while the remainder of the Line follows behind them. Following the game, students rush to the sidelines and take up a special Baylor Line area behind the opponents’ bench, where they watch the game, cheer on the Bears, and heckle the opposing team.

Women were not allowed to join until 1993, when it became an all-male group. The Baylor Line began as a group of freshmen guys who lined the front of Baylor’s student section with the sole intention of shielding Baylor ladies from the more violent fans of opposing teams.Until 1998, the Line’s jersey colours alternated between green in odd-numbered years and gold in even-numbered years (class of 2002). This was changed to green every year until circa 2001, when the decision was made to utilise gold every year in the goal of having a more substantial looking student section. Members of the Baylor University Chamber of Commerce who lead the Baylor Line in chants now wear green jerseys, which feature “CC” on the back instead of a graduation year.
