Amy Jean Klobuchar (born May 25, 1960) is an American lawyer and politician who has represented Minnesota in the United States Senate since 2007. She formerly served as the Hennepin County attorney and is a member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), Minnesota’s Democratic Party affiliate. Klobuchar was born in Plymouth, Minnesota, and attended Yale University and the University of Chicago Law School. She worked as a partner in two Minneapolis law firms before being elected county attorney for Hennepin County in 1998, where she was in charge of all criminal prosecution in the state’s most populated county. Klobuchar was elected to the Senate for the first time in 2006, representing Minnesota.
Klobuchar worked as a business lawyer after graduating from law school. Klobuchar worked as a partner at the Minnesota law firms Dorsey & Whitney and Gray Plant Mooty, where she specialised in “regulatory work in telecommunications law” before running for government. Klobuchar’s first excursion into politics occurred after she gave birth and was forced to leave the hospital only 24 hours later, a scenario made more difficult by the fact that her daughter, Abigail, was born with a condition that prohibited her from swallowing. Klobuchar used the experience to lobby the Minnesota State Legislature for a measure that would guarantee new moms a 48-hour hospital stay. Minnesota was the first state to pass it. Klobuchar became an early frontrunner for the DFL candidacy for the 2006 election when U.S. Senator Mark Dayton indicated he would not seek reelection in early 2005. Klobuchar received the DFL support on June 9, 2006, after EMILY’s List supported her on September 29, 2005. During the primaries, she had the backing of the majority of Minnesota’s DFL state lawmakers. Klobuchar defeated her closest opponent, Patty Wetterling, 66 percent to 15% in a poll of DFL state delegates. Wetterling withdrew out of the campaign in January and backed Klobuchar. Mike Ciresi, a former Senate candidate and famous lawyer, said in early February that he was considering running for the DFL. Klobuchar won re-election to the United States Senate by a 35-point margin over Republican State Representative Kurt Bills (65.23 percent to 30.53 percent), winning all but two counties. Klobuchar was re-elected by a 24-point margin for a third term. Jim Newberger, a state representative, was the Republican nominee. Klobuchar has raised $9.9 million more than Newberger, bringing the total to $210,066 as of October 17. Throughout the fall, Klobuchar maintained a double-digit lead in the polls.
According to a September 2009 survey, 58 percent of Minnesotans approved of Klobuchar’s job performance, while 36 percent disapproved. According to Rasmussen Reports, 67 percent of Minnesotans approved of her job on March 12, 2010. She is a “unique politician that works across the aisle,” according to the Winona Daily News. “She has done better in that terrible Senate than most people there,” Walter Mondale observed. In 2016, Klobuchar was in Latvia with Lindsey Graham and John McCain. Klobuchar has approved more legislation than any other senator at the end of the 114th Congress, which ended in late 2016. She advocated for an independent, bipartisan commission to examine links between Russia and President Donald Trump and his associates in February 2017. On January 6, 2021, Klobuchar was in the United States Capitol as Trump supporters seized it. She and Senator Roy Blunt, the leading Democrat on the Senate Rules Committee, co-led Senate discussions during the 2021 United States Electoral College vote count. Along with Representatives Blunt, Rodney Davis, and Zoe Lofgren, she also worked as a teller. Klobuchar took part in the Senate floor discussion when Senate Republicans, led by Senator Ted Cruz, opposed to the certification of Arizona’s electoral votes. The Capitol was breached just after she finished speaking.
